Stableford comp this weekend was a non-starter thanks to the weather. Hard frosts on Friday night and again on Saturday meant the ground was frozen solid and the greens like iron. Again and again, decent shots into greens just meant lost balls in the rubbish way behind the greens. “Just play short”… obviously, but even when that plan worked the chipping on and putting was just comedy.
No order of merit, non-handicap qualifying, but Saturday’s comp went ahead anyway ‘for fun’. Still it was golf (of a kind) and it was the same for everyone so out we went for a competitive, good natured game regardless.
Asif and Janine took the Saturday Swindle with 35points, great scoring given the conditions. Shot of the day was probably Janine’s scuffed tee shot on the 3rd – hitting the lake, bouncing off the ice onto the green. Would’ve won the pin if canny Sean hadn’t then nipped it. 35pts was very impressive.
Sunday, and Happy Birthday Mr Stock
Matt’s birthday on Sunday and he was around in the afternoon collecting best wishes and a cheeky pint. The comp was scrapped completely as Sunday morning saw an even harder, whiter frost across the course. Made for some good pictures.
We had a mini Swindle anyway, fivers on the card and Asif took the honours with 36 points pipping Bryan Hogben and I think Bri Chamberlain by 1. “4 blobs I had, 4 blobs” Bryan was heard chuntering away to himself. Bizarrely some great scoring amongst all of us despite the rock hard conditions, with nearly everyone in the 30’s. Hard fairways certainly helped some drives, Al Savs on Saturday and then myself and Bryan Hogben each driving driving just to the front of the 8th green.
Ritchie and I took on Mr Lovely and Asif in our 4ball on Sunday, halving it the 18th – a good close game. Special note for Mr Graham Lovely who nutted one down the 17th to barely a few yards short of the 17th. Putting onto the green, it went stiff and nearly an eagle. Impressive.
Next comp is on the 4th/5th Feb I believe so do sign up if your name isnt down already.
