Par 3 @North Foreland
Long day, started with an early start for all 26 or 27 of the Surrey National lot all turning up down at Ramsgate for the traditional par3 event. “Sadly”, no, I mean “well done” to Mr Graham Loveless for another sterling par3 win. Winkle, Jaggsy myself and I think Backdoor ran him close but he wasnt to be outdone for a second win in two years I think. *cough* Generous half handicap *cough*, maybe next year it’ll be a quarter and medal based I think Phil was suggesting. *I’ll vote IN on that one*!
Graham Adam’s black-electic-multi-coloured-slashed troosers were certainly not to be outdone… “You been decorating in them Graham?” rang out from a certain reserved flower called Mr B Bone. Various levels of skill and desperation were on show, but after the halfway house did a great business for breakfast and bacon butties, a great start to the day. (Apparently that halfway house was voted in top5 for the UK the members were saying).
The Main ‘pink’ attired event
97 played in the largest field for the Thorley Taverns Charity event. We had a large lunch, found our teams, and headed out to our tees for the shotgun start. Weather held, there was a breeze but it was warm and humid for the day, just turning a tad chilly at the end as the sun set.
Format is stableford, winners for being placed in top3, prize for coming last(!) and fines aplenty for any offences. Woody and Winkle sneaking down the day before for a practice was a popular fine once Philip Thorley found out about that!
Jaggsy won our Swindle bet with 40points and came in 3rd overall on countback. Well done Mr Jaggs. Some hackers called Keiren and Matt Stock came in next from our lot with me also sneaking in above 30. Matt (Stock) and I won the team score along with local faces Brian and Andy who unfortunately couldn’t make the evening do. We all enjoyed the round in our 4ball – Matt extremely solid off the tee and from the fairway with his new irons. I didnt start well losing balls for fun in the lush rough and my flying hooked shots flying out past OB posts… but as a pairing we steadied the ship eventually and actually took them to a hard-fought 17th green before we lost. Brian was holing from everywhere and came in with 40points himself.
Quick turnaround after a long hot round and we all found hotels and showers for the evening meal/drinks/charity auction at the Pegwell Bay hotel hosted by the very able Mr Philip Thorley. Charity auction went well despite Richard’s well intentioned bidding! Snashers grabbed a signed boxing poster and Winkle grabbed a very smart push trolley. Food was top notch again, and yes I think I did lick every plate of the 5 courses clean. No shock, before you say anything Mr Macve.
Long day turned into a long evening for most, especially for those of us at the Oak Hotel in Ramsgate marina. We found a cracking late night Belgium bar nearby – I ducked out at half1, but the Pistol Knights along with Jaggsy and Stevie-boy carried to about 4 as a local girl took to the piano for a singalong drinking session. Some very, very weary heads the next day and Barry’s video of a certain Mr S McNally spread out on the bed, snoring for England in his pants, early the next day made popular viewing.
We headed out in various states for the always classy and well presented Hever Castle. Quite a drive after the night before but well worth it. A fantastic day again, less sticky than North Foreland but it was hotter so it was sun cream… and game faces… on.
I was out first partnering Mr Graham Lovely as we faced up against Philip and The Pistols’ Pete Endicot. We had a great round, quite long off the whites (and they were put at the back), but Graham and I were up against it from the start as Phil started, continued… and finished on fire. Very solid on almost every shot and definitely every putt. Peter and Graham didn’t have a great day finishing on 21 and 19pts respectively, but my ground-out 35 wasn’t up for Phil’s 38 who took the overall win. I nabbed the back nine with 19 and Grubbster smashed the front with 22. We won’t mention Danny’s front of 5points, no… we won’t.
Firstly to Philip Thorley for the invite, organising and hotel arrangements for all of us to have a great Charity day once again. My 4th year I think, and spaces will be even tighter next year – talk of a possible ballot given how we all have such a great time year-on-year. Thanks Philip.
And of course thanks also to our own Mr Macve who again led in the organising of all 27 of us at North Foreland and Hever Castle. To a man we all had a great time. And well done Stevie boy for surviving yet another late night session and managing the betting and monies.
I know I’ve not mentioned a heap of things about the two days….
… but its late, I started this late on Sunday and I’d had a curry and a few beers and I’m still shattered. So, please feel free to add anything below.
