Saturday saw a warm, mild and very damp Autumn day, and the “Prime Cuts “of Tom Beef Austin, Scottie, Mini-Me Harry Yule and Simon G won the Captain Pro Challenge.
Scramble format is always a good round, albeit it not always as fast as it should be. Really need to speed these events up but everyone seemed to have a good day… and it didn’t rain!
Off early, our fourball of Ritchie, Jaggsy, Al Savs and myself started a very steadily with two pars before a birdie dropped on the 3rd. Never within a sniff of a bogey, we had a solid round and a late charge wasn’t just enough. Ritchie knocked in a long putt for eagle on the 12th, Jaggsy very nearly holed his iron to the 13th for a 18inch birdie, but we then all missed a 5 foot birdie on the 14th. Birdies on 17th and 18th returned a good back nine but turns out we were two birdies short of the win.
Fivers of the tenner entry went towards a bet of your score against the captain/pros team which was Winkle, Dom, Kieren and Rory. Handful of winners were marked up, Jaggsy and Al Savs amongst them.
Chatting to quite a few groups, several groups started well… stories of 5 birdies in first 6 holes, 6 under after 10…. however the next line then started with “But…..”.
Out towards the end, I heard Scottie, Tom, Harry and Simon came in with 12 birdies (I think), a cracking round from a lethal fourball! 57.3 won the day, pipping the Pistols’ team by just half a shot.
Well done to them all.
