(Updated, see Mark’s report at the bottom)
We win and a team and we lose as a team? Well, today we lost!
Cracking day to play golf anywhere, and why not Surrey Downs away in the Surrey Hills League. A great fixture anyway, helped by the buffet breakfast on offer… even though we were in the queue behind Scottie and a bleary-eyed Mr T Austin Esquire.
Some last minute team tweaks required, but 10 SN all turned up to stuff faces with breakfast and with vague hopes to stuff the opposition.
I think all teams didnt start too well, groups around us seem to go down to early Surrey Downs steady play.
Captain Mark and I played their Captain Matt and Dave, a regular team for them, and it showed as they dovetailed steadily on the front 9. Before we knew it we were 2, 3 and then 4 down and clearly up against it. Some solid play through the turn and into the back9 and we pulled it together getting back on terms into the last few holes. 12 Handicap Dave drove the green on the 17th but we at least forced him to putt the 4footer for birdie, before we then tackled the 18th taking it by a whisker with Mark sinking his putt, Dave missing and we got the well deserved half.
Lee and Tom played well at the front to win by one. Jim and Al were playing their 2handicapper but took a great win by two and Mark and I came in with a half.
News wasnt so good from Dave Page and Junior McNally. Guys they played were knocking it in for fun. Chips in, putts from anywhere and knocking it stiff from 100 yards. Their opponents at least had the grace to sheepishly grin when they recorded a 9hole win.
At the back Scottie and Jez were also up against it coming in 8 down. Some good humoured finger pointing entertained us all during post match drinks. Scottie blamed Jez, Jez said it was Scottie. Our Northern petal managed to forget his putter but apparently a spare in Jez’ car (a Scotty Cameron no less), didnt work for Missus Yule and the putts were not just dropping. Their opponents clearly took advantage.
So not the best result, but to be fair, Surrey Downs have picked strong teams this year and they were all certainly up for it today. Farleigh at home next then I think Woldingham away!
Updated! Captain Mark’s report
Where do I start, I guess if we were a football team I would be looking for a new job this morning 🙁
Saturday we went to Surrey Downs full of beans. On paper a strong team as normal and with the weather turning up the heat our expectations were high. As usual we kicked off with a brilliant breakfast supplied by Surrey Downs, although on refection maybe one or two of us ate to much !
The course was also fantastic, the greens fast (compared to ours) and the rough was really harsh. In fact it had been left to grow in preparation for their club championship in a few weeks and although the guys we played with mentioned it frequently the fairways are generous enough that you shouldn’t go anyway near it. But if you did, say goodbye to that ball !
So the matches started well for us, the first group taking a 1 point lead after a hard fought battle against some young guns. Group two came in with another 2 points, again after some great golf played by both teams. Group three saw Hew and I play their Captain for the day. It’s fair to say Hew and I started slowly and were quickly 4 down after 5. However pride took over and we managed to square the match with a 10 foot putt on the last. To be honest both pairs played some excellent golf and a draw was a fair result.
So here we are sitting in the bar drinking well earned beers, 3 points ahead on a lovely sunny afternoon. When the clouds started gathering (metaphorically speaking) group 4 came in looking like a beating team. In fact they lost by 9, which was followed by group 5 also losing by 8 points. So from 3 points up to 14 down in 15 minutes 🙁 this certainly soured the beer slightly.
This result has of course dropped us down the league table to around 4th place, so we need to rally for the last three games and take our frustration out on Woldingham and Farleigh and climb back near the top.
Well done everyone for your event, even if you lost. I know you tried (please hand your team shirts back to the club…. only joking)
