The clubs of the Altonwood Group met at Surrey National on Sunday 25th August to compete for the Trilogy Trophy. This was won by Surrey National last year at The Addington.
For the men was myself, Geoff Russon, Sean Savedra, Mark Wheddon, Joe Krarup and David Crouch. For the ladies were Bronwen O’Driscoll, Beatriz Crawford-Carse, Carol Newman, Tracey Savedra, Margaret Butterworth and Jane Macve.
As the results came in through the afternoon things couldn’t have been much tighter.
The Addington started very strongly and were leading by 1 point after the first four matches. Despite early wins from Sean Savedra and Mark Wheddon in matches 2 and 3 and a commendable 2nd place from Joe “Dr Golf” Krarup in match 4, The Addington still managed to extend their lead further to 1½ points by the halfway point. Tracey Savedra delivered the team’s 3rd win in match 7 which took Surrey National briefly ahead in the competition for the first time. After match 9 (won by your truely!) the competition was back to tied between us and The Addington … and Westerham were lurking just 2 points behind. Match 10 unfortunately allowed The Addington to retake the advantage and lead by 1½ points with two matches to come in. Then the results of the final match (match 12) came in before match 11. Senior’s Captain, David Crouch had came through and delivered a much needed 4 points and more importantly taking another 3 point swing over The Addington putting the Surrey National team back into first place by 1½ points. The results of match 11 came in shortly after and despite The Addington winning this match Jane Macve had hung on to a well-deserved 2nd place minimising the damage and giving Surrey National an overall win by ½ point.
Given the close margins careful analysis of the cards and scores ensued and finally Surrey National was declared the victors, winning the trophy for the 4th time.
The competition was followed by lunch which went down very well based on all the feedback I received (so well done to the SN catering staff!) and the event was closed off with the presentation of the trophy that was accepted by Sean on behalf of the club.
Given the heavy rain this weekend our green staff had done another great job in getting the course into good shape for the competition and I heard a number of very good comments about our course. I would also like to thank all of the Surrey National management team for their support in helping organise the event, in particular Caroline Wells, Rob Sturgeon and Matt Stock.
I believe next year we will be defending the trophy at Westerham … so let’s make it 3 in a row!!!
1st Surrey National 34 points
2nd The Addington 33 ½ points
3rd Westerham 29 points
4th Woldingham 23 ½ points
