Swashies strong in early August Stableford

6 August, 2017 by Hew Leave a Comment

Saturday

Some top scores in Saturday’s Stableford after young Luke Carter posted a superb 40pts on Saturday with 73 gross.  Hitting a very good ball at the mo is Luke, now getting down towards a 3 handicap now after pipping Peter LeCren on countback.  Our Simon B’s good form continued with 37pts for 5th and The Feez nipped into the top 10 with 36pts.

Sunday

Most of the Swashbucklers were out in Sunday’s comp, another good field of about 40players and we enjoyed a warm, bright day with a sniff of cloud but no real danger of rain.

Scottie, Jez and I were out in a three ball and we had some steady golf with Jez chipping in off the 5th for a birdie and a very nice 4pts.  Come the ninth and Jez saw his drive hit the tree and drop, but as Scottie’s did the same for some bizarre reason we couldn’t find it anywhere.  Very strange – he trudged back to the tee for a provisional but could only return a blob.

At the turn we saw Dan Mason out with TullyMonster and Al Savs playing the 16th and some mad story about Dan being 37 pts already!  Not content with doing so well in the Captain’s Cup, Mr Mason was clearly in form again!

Front nine had me on 20pts, Jez 19 and Scottie on 15 with a blob on the 9th proving painful.  Clearly frustrated from the 9th, the boy Yule got his head down and smashed the back nine.   Some impressive putting, some low-drilled driving and throw in his hyrid approach on the par5 5th which finished about 2foot from the flag, the resulting eagle really took the handbrake off for Scottie.

5 under gross on the back9 …

… must surely have been one of the best up there in recent times.   Seriously top golf Scottie.  So 15 pts on the front, but 25 on the back (!) saw him return 40pts – level gross even with his triple on the 9th.  I eventually found birdies on 16th and 17th to come in with 39pts and Jez had 37 helped by another 4 for 4 on the 14th.

16 players came back with 35 or better – some good scoring today with greens in decent nick before they are tined this week.

In the final shake up, Dan Mason took the fivers on the cards with a very impressive 41pts and the overall competition win.  He nicked it on countback from Dan T with Scottie in 3rd.  Well played all.  Jim saw a handicap cut for 38pts and 7th place, Jez 9th with 37.
