After the Hinkson Cup was effectively washed out a few weeks ago, Junior organiser Paul (Daly) and our own Lee Feasey spoke about arranging a match of our Swindle vs. the Juniors. Both felt it would give some good competition experience to our Junior team. In a “friendly” atmosphere, the ‘oldies’ could also share some rules, thoughts and approaches to better ball matchplay… whilst trying their best not to get horribly bashed up by the talented Juniors in the club.
The Juniors fielded a near complete team with ages ranging from 9 to 14(?). The Swashbucklers fielded a full team with ages of 23 to … *cough* … a bit more than 23.
Gritty campaigners that the Swashbucklers are, we did manage to win the matches.

Phil’s photo is the best, eyes closed visualising the 1st hole… what a pro.
Teams…. (including selected match reviews)!
Phil Macve & Hew Whitefoord win by 1 hole to Dexter and Louis
Hew’s report:
Phil and I fought off the challenge of Louis and Dexter, winning by one hole but only by Phil holing his mighty 2-footer putt on the 18th for the half on the last. Louis played off the Academy tees pulling a bag bigger than him and Dex did a great job off the yellows driving very well all day and chipping in from 40yards on the 17th.
Sean Savedra & Jerry Assig Vs Harry & Nick
Jerry’s report:
Sean and myself had the great pleasure in playing Harry & Nick both of the lads are thirteen with middle twenties handicaps, they played very well together taking a couple of holes each, it was Sean & Myself dovetailing,it could have been another story if not ! I am looking forward to a seniors match next April and no doubt another Swashbuckler’s match with the Juniors, it was a good event let’s keep it going.
Graham Adams & Mark Wheddon beat Jonathan and Hayden 2&1
Graham’s report:
As Smashie & Nicey trundled their trollies off to their respective shots on the first, Johno and Hayden thought it was in the bag. One was in the trees the other just made the fairway.Sadly the aging rockers had more lead in their pencils than the whippersnappers thought (well one did anyway). Fairly quickly the old soaks established a 3 hole advantage which they held on to until the 8th. Then whippersnappers gave the soaks a dig in the ribs on the 9th to reduce the lead to just 2.
Johno “Cant drive but watch my second shot” and Haydon “drive it miles but can’t putt” decided to put the hammer down on the back 9 and by the 14th brought it back to all square. The old soaks looked beaten, but then Smashie’s brilliant (lucky) putt on the 15th established a one stroke lead, which unbelievably was held on the 16th when Nicey somehow managed a net par on the 16th, his first this year we believe.
Sadly Smashie put Johno and Hayden to the sword on the 17 for the old soaks to win 2&1. (edit: “old sods”?]
Alan Gollop & James Doran Vs Josh and (big) Paul!
Jim’s report
Alan and I had the pleasure of Josh’s company on Saturday; a 20 handicapper and definitely a decent golfer in the making. Unfortunately, the other junior blow-out so he was replaced by Dexter’s Dad; Paul, who is definitely a decent golfer playing off 10.Thankfully, Alan was playing very well (as winning the comp on Sunday demonstrated!) so we managed to win on the day, although young Josh had a 6 footer on the last to square the match, but squirted it past the hole.
A most enjoyable day for all concerned.
Lee was the non-playing captain of the Swashbucklers on the day and Paul jumped in as a Junior to balance the teams.
A good day had by all… and perhaps the Veterans will soon be in the Junior’s firing line for the next match. Watch this space.
The first thing I called him was Loo-iss, walking down the first and you corrected me and said, it’s not Loo-iss Phil, it’s Louey! hence I called him that for the rest of the day.
Oh dear, I’m confused… this cycling into work lark is doing me no favours.
What amused me was the determined way he corrected us both!
