A “friendly” challenge match was held at Hever Castle Golf Club on Saturday, conceived and managed by Phil for the Swashbucklers and Dom for the ‘Hangovers’ (aka Dom’s Divas… somehow that name wasnt accepted by them). Eight faced eight, in paired better ball in a ‘Surrey Hills’ points format (matches played to the end out of 18points, 1pt for a hole, 1/2 for a half).
Hever was in good nick, greens possibly not as polished as Surrey Downs, but still good. Unfortunately the course appears to have clicked into ‘winter mode’… we had to play of the yellows, many of which were laughably forward. More comedy on the first tee when The ‘ye olde’ Starter gave us stickers with a target finish time as an “experiment” to keep play up (his word!). Bemused us as Phil and I took on Danny and Steve out first and we spent about 15 holes waiting on the 2ball in front of us.
Not much we can do about the yellow tees or the slow 2ball, but that aside cue the banter … and it was game on.
Phil and I started fairly steadily grabbing the first hole but Steve came in to half the second, and we both c8cked up the 3rd to go one down. From then on Phil and I were down most of the match, getting back to all square on the 13th, only to lose the 14th.
Match probably turned on the stroke index1 15th, with us all around the green for the same, Danny and Steve both got shots but after my long putt secured a bogey, neither Danny or Steve could pop their 5footers in and we escaped with a half. Still one down.
Halving the long straight 16th, the 620yard 17th was reduced to barely 500 with the forward tee and despite a scuffed chip, Phil decided he then wanted to knock in a 30 foot putt to win the hole. All square up the last. Heading up the 18th, Phil had put his second short and I was in close for two and the boys were in the sand.
Before you know it, Phil doesnt hit a convincing chip but then stood up and knocked in another 20footer and the match was won by 1 hole. (9.5 to 8.5).
Hangovers take a convincing win
Hew and Philip beat Danny and Steve 9.5 8
Lee and Mark drew with Baz and Badger……………9 9
Sean and Dean lost to Mick and GP……………7 11
Jim and Al lost to Bob and Dom…….7.5 10.5
Sadly our hard fought win, by the narrowest of margins, didnt add much to the overall result. Lee and Winkle fought out a half with Lee banging in a long par putt on the last for the hole. Deano and Sean were taken to task by 4 holes, and Jim and Gollampost were pleased to only go down by 3 from a very in form Bob Betts and ‘cheerleader’ Dom.
So the Hangovers take the overall win. Well done to TeamDom.
A very enjoyabe day, yellow tees made the course shorter but did make a different challenge to a few of the holes.
Definitely an annual event I’m sure, I hope another contest will be put in the diary soon.
