On a hot and humid Sunday, we welcomed the mixed pairs from Sutton Green for the much awaited ‘friendly’.
A crowd of us have been playing in their Mixed Open for the last five years, it’s a fantastic day with great company, so last year I spoke to Bernie and Louise about organising a friendly mixed match at Surrey National. We finally got a date in the diary, thank you to Bronwen.
It was another scorcher of a day, we teed off at 10.30, too many people to mention but there were six pairs from each club, Caroline and myself were the last group, it comprised three golfers and me, Mikey and Mel played off of 6 and 5 respectively and Caroline 9. Same old, same old for me…19! So I was very lucky to be playing with three great golfers.
We called it a ‘Friendly’ but it was clear to see that our match was going to be serious. Mikey had been studying pictures of our course, he’d done his preparation and they both looked ready to win. We had a great match and although the match was very competitive, it was played in great spirit, it could have gone either way and indeed it did for most of the round, Mel and I had the last two putts of the day to halve the match, we did so and it was the right result as I am sure they would agree. It was the first time I had played with Caroline who played very well and pretty much played the back nine on her own, I think my birdie on 17 helped but I didn’t do much else. I real enjoyed partnering her, her attitude is very similar to mine and we made good partners.
Worth noting that Mikey and Mel agreed to deem bunkers as GUR after we had both dumped our balls in the right hand green side bunker on the fourth, it was very sporting of them.
The overall result was 4-2, but all seemed to be close matches. I hope everyone enjoyed it, I am sure they did and aside from the bunkers, the course was in great shape. I think the slow greens may have taken a bit of getting used to for the Sutton Green guys.
“Report from the course….”
Margaret and myself played match two against Vickie 14 handicap + 2 courtesy shots and Peter 26 ish I think another leftie a very nice playing couple.
The match itself was nip and tuck all the way around with never more than a hole either side the trouble was that I did not put a 5 footer in on the 17 Th and that left us level going up the 18 Th
then Vickie had a great put to par for a one hole win with the match now over we nipped to the bar and tucked into the cider good times.

We enjoyed some great food and wine afterwards with most people staying for a couple of hours with words of thank you said by Sean and Louise. By the end of the day It was the usual suspects propping up the bar, me being top of the list!
I am sure you will all join me in thanking Liz and Peter for their excellent organisation on what was a very successful day, we look forward to a return match at Sutton Green next year.
Thank you to the Sutton Green guys for coming, we hope you all enjoyed it.
