Surrey National win away at Woldingham

23 July, 2017 by Hew 1 Comment

Surrey Hills again today and we were away at Woldingham.  Team Captain Woody had the team ready and up for it at a favourite fixture for the team – we all know the course and usually most of the players.  Saying that, a few new faces for Woldingham and after a good breakfast it was a trip to the putting green then onto the first tee.

Weather behaved, rain threatened for about 3pm but we were hoping to get in before that and we didn’t really see anything except for a few drops halfway through.

Winning team today (l to r): Andy, Luke, Dan, Tom (The Beef), Hew (reflection), Al Lampost, Club Capt Winkle, The Feez, Paul and Team Capt Woody

Post-round drinks revealed we had some good rounds amongst us.  Obviously point-matchplay for all 18 holes in the league, many still tracked a stableford score, and tales of 40, 39 and 38 points abound amongst our lot.  Perhaps our handicaps do travel well at Woldingham but seems we all put together some good scores in our pairs against a determined home team.

The Feez and Lampost led the way against the always steady Jim and very straight Bill coming in 4up. Dan and Luke were level after 9 and went a couple down I think before returning a hard fought half.  Team Capt Woody and Beef battled for a 1up win with Andy and Paul going down by 4 to the home team.

Mark and I were out last against Rob and Steve.  I managed a good start with a couple early birdies and we hit the turn 2up after a bundle of halved holes with Winkle holing a few important putts.  A close back nine with the Woldingham boys nabbing a couple back (usually after we first nicked one ourselves), and we found ourselves 1up on the 18th tee.  We both kept ourselves in it to the end but I poked in 5footer birdie to see us end the day 2up.

Scores all in and we managed an away win by 3 – a very solid team effort all round.  Well done all.

League Standings

Website for the league is here at http://surreyhillsleague.com/.  Reigate are very strong this year but few key games coming up for everyone.

As it stands end of July… our next (and final) 3 games are at home
