Slight delay to the match report… Captain Wayne was threatening to do next week when he’s back at work… so I’ll lob in a very, very abbreivated one.
After last week’s mauling away at Regiate Hill in the Surrey Hills, we hosted them for the return match last Sunday.
Determined not only to win @home (which obvs is a must for any title hopes), we wanted to go all-out to limit the points-difference from the away match. ‘Points Difference’ is what the Surrey Hills mens and seniors league tables are based on. Format is better-ball matchplay across all 18 holes, 1pt for a hole win, 1/2 for a 1/2. The five match scores added up from each side and result returned.
Old campaigner Wayne and Tom led us out against another familiar face Reigate’s Mark and Andy who was receiving a healthy number of shots. Solid golf from our boys and they bought in 4pt win to start us off.
Winkle and Scottie out next against a high handicap pairing. With a heap of shots given out it was ominious for the result given how well their higher handicappers played last week. Some quality golf from the boys, Scottie doing 16holes 2under or something, Winkle inevitably hitting the ball like the driving God he is… and they came in winning by 3.
James and I had a hard match against Tom and Ryan, both who hit the ball very well. We were giving 6 and 10 respectively, James receiving just 2 off me. Tom especially hit a very long ball, his hybrid usually bombing it past James and I. We went a couple up early on as they figured out our greens. We reached the 8th 3up but then they won 4 of the next 5 holes with some solid dovetailing and we were one down. Halved holes followed before James rolled in a 4footer to take the hole on the 15th. We defended the 16th after a good two putt from James, and Ryan followed up with his own 4 footer to half the 17th.
All square on the 18th and Tom found his long drive in the right rough to only find the sand on the 18th, and Ryan had to lay up. Not playing particularly well on the day, I managed to find a good 5iron into the 18th to a couple of feet to nick it on the last with a birdie. All agreed it was a great game, and whilst a half arguably could’ve been a fair result, from our side the 1up win felt like a big win against their solid play.
45mins+ later, Grant and Ross came in. Very very slow match I’m afraid, and not down to our boys. Their scratch player had a good game, and putting it to 5feet on the 18th from the fairway bunker secured them the 1hole win after our pair pushed that little too hard and each found the water. Good grinding chaps, up against it on the day with their scratch player doing well. Match made slightly uncomfortable with a rules call on the 14th I heard but I think a wrapped tree differs to a stake. In any case, seriously good battling from Grant and Ross.
Round of the day was surely from our Kev who was out witha different partner in Mr Lee Stringer. Seems always-solid Lee was reduced to cheerleader as Kev ripped into the golf course and his partners and pulled out a “worldy”. 45pts was it Kev? A lifetime’s best I heard and what a great time to put it in. Poor old Reigate boys didnt have much chance and went down by 8. Great golf.
Final result, 52.5 vs 37.5. Great home result and makes a big difference in the table turning around their own big win against us last week.
Well done all, great team effort.
