Whilst the two Matt’s and Richie lorded it up at the London Club today, 20 of us or so headed down the M3 to visit Matt Stock at the very nice Weybrook Park.
Wind was brutal today… patience needed yep maybe… but in fact it was more a deep bag of golf balls and a sense of humour.
Matt has been at Weybrook for a wee while and I thought it was a great setup. Members course but welcoming to green fees, it had a friendly feel to it and a great golf setup. A very nice course; an impressive open front nine, leading into a more treelined and friendlier back nine. A new nine will be introduced next year to match the 9 we played today, and the club will have a seriously very good 18holes to boast about… and a still respectable extra nine to use for seniors/juniors/members/societies.
Out second in the second group, Bri C, Jim and myself were playing with Stockie who was actually playing only his second 18holes this year. Front nine was tough in strong gusty winds and 2 or 3 holes of driving medium rain. Wind soon blew us dry though. Bri had a tough day, he drove well but his irons were just not behaving at all. Not sure what Stockie returned, but Bri was 6, Jim 9 and I was 12 on the front.
Back nine a tad more sheltered but still with the wind blowing which had dropped a tiny bit. Jim put in some solid few holes with great drives for 18pts, I was doing ok but blobbed the last two and Bri was finding it hard going. We had a cracking 4ball though, all enjoying the 4ball and the course despite the conditions (and the inevitable ropey golf on occasion).
As the scores came in seems the front nine ate quite a few up… and ate quite a few balls too. Jim stuck two in the lake by the 7th green, Matt 1 and Brian 2 I think.
Wayne was on a roll halfing the front with 16 with Rob (both having two blobs each I think). But it turns out Wayne ran away with it with an impressive 37 points on a new course, in that wind. Well played big boy.
Cracking round by Rob with 33, Mr Lovely and Seanus in 3rd with 31 pts.
Big thanks to Wayne for organising (and winning his own bet), and to Stockie who gave us a great deal on the day.
I will be certainly signing up for our next trip down there, not least because without the wind it would be a whole different course. Matt did say they have some opens there which I’d be in for as well.
