Surrey National take win @home vs Farleigh by 5

7 August, 2016 by Hew Leave a Comment

A great fixture in the Surrey Hills calendar…  we hosted the always-up-for-it Farleigh at home last Saturday.

We’re moving ourselves into a good position in the league with a game in hand and two home games coming up.  At the risk of being a stuck record… every point counts (it really does here), and of course securing good points at home is a must.

A cracking day, bright sunny and warm.   Danny and Jay turned up fashionably on time *cough*, breakkies sorted and Baz who was up against it to make it managed to arrive on time… teams sorted and we headed out.  Farleigh had one late-show, so teams were shuffled a bit… all above board Johnny assured me… 🙂  and we were off.

Graham and Jim were out first and up against the ol’ Farleigh stalwarts of solid Tony and steady Simon.  I’ve played against both several times and I’m sure it was a good fourball.  Very competitive as reported by both teams.  Tony said some good things about Graham’s golf (well, someone has to), Jim turned in an eagle, there were birdies and it seemed our boys were dormie four.  Lovely… in the bag you’d think?  Not so.  There is a reason these boys have won the league 3 or 4 times in a row… and Tony and Simon turned in a cracking four holes with birdies and solid pars and the game ended all square on the 18th.

Woody and I were up against Craig and Graham.  Tall with very long ‘levers’, Craig hit his 3wood a country mile.  Dangerous off of 10 for sure and though his partner Graham didnt have his best day, we squeezed ahead after a few holes we’d all rather forget (3rd especially) and we found the turn 1 up with some decent (and required) dovetailing.  It remained close as we started the back nine, but we managed to go 2up on the 13th, 3up on the 14th but my three putt gifted them a hole back on the 15th.  Steve halved the 16th and my up n’ down from behind the 17th secured an important half on that hole.  I managed a good par on the last for a win and we came in winning by 3.

Scotty and Jaggsy did very well.  Didnt pick up too much on the result, but Monsieur LeJaggs enjoyed the applause after he arrowed his second into the 18th to 5 feet, knowing he had a shot.  He carefully rolled it close for the win on the hole and the overall game win by 4holes.  Well done both, best result on the day.

Paul G and Danny played the Farleigh young guns.  A cracking game by all accounts, and the Farleigh fist pumping on the 18th green sadly meant our boys had lost on the last by one measley point.  Very competitive all round, just pipped at the last after being level or ahead for the whole round  Well done our boys, probably facing the hardest pairing.

Jay and Baz up last.  Jay smashed his drive on the 18th an almost laughable distance and got well deserved applause after his approach went close.  Birdie slipped past but a very good finish.  Another close game, their boys were very impressed by Jay’s putting on the day but it just wasn’t enough and they came in just one down.

So overall another great fixture and we came out on top by five… 47.5 vs. 43.5.

Final score sheet

If not spectacular a very good, solid result.  Its important to note that their captain Johnny said offhandly that they thought that going down by five at our place was a good result.

Steve and I were grumbling somewhat that we may have nicked a couple more… Danny and Paul felt they’d put in enough for a win or a half at least…  Jim and Graham lost last few final holes to some great Farleigh play.  Yes, it may have been a few more but its a good win against a very strong team… so its huge congrats to everyone.

We’ll take it  and look forward to hosting Woldingham on Bank Holiday Saturday.
