Posted on behalf of Team Captain Wayne
Sunday saw our last home game in the Surrey Hills League, before going into last three games away from home. We had already a good 26 point lead on the rest of the pack, but knowing that Woldingham were struggling against the other teams, it was vital to get another convincing win against our sister club.
The weather from the previous day had left the bunkers in a poor state of repair, so there was nobody more happy than me, to hear they were out of play!
Unfortunately, our superstar of the year, Kevin Perry had a last minute injury at work (personally I think he’ been celebrating too much after his crushing Blue Bogey win, but get better soon Kev!! I understand it was a shoulder injury, rather than a wrist injury!!), so our last minute juggle was required and Ritchie Blake very kindly stepped in as a last minute reserve.
Match 1 – James & Wayne v Mark & Ray
James got off to a flying start, parring the first three holes, which only saw us all square, because Ray playing off 14 had the same start, so we knew we had our work cut out right from the start. Shots eventually came into play, which saw me winning the first hole on the fourth with a cheeky par net birdie.
The game continued with every hole being played to a finish and for a new pairing, me and James walked off the front nine 3 up feeling very happy, knowing we were only one over as a two ball. We kept on pouring on the pressure, until the 12th hole, which saw Mark win Woldingham’s first hole with a birdie.
This appeared to be the only minor blow with us going to the 18th hole 6 up and still only one over the course. However, Ray had a shot on the last hole and made it count with a par, nett birdie. It was Ray’s first club match, so not too disappointed that he won the last hole, because the match was played in a very friendly an enjoyable way.
FINAL SCORE 5 UP
Match 2 – Hew & Mark v Pat & Joe
I’d played with Joe at Walton Heath last month so it was nice to have another game today along with Pat and the one-and-only Winkle. We started well, halving the first with par against their shot and returned the rest of the front9 in level par. Joe and Pat were a bit drawn out by our uneven lies and decent greens but to be fair we didn’t give them any breathing space and kept errors to a minimum.
I think he’d hold his hands up and say it wasn’t really his day but Winkle helped with two key blows on the front nine, sliding in a 12footer on the 8th and pitching to gimmie range on the 9th. He followed it up later by sealing the game on the 18th with another long putt. Solid win in the end but we all enjoyed the round (if not all the result), thanks to Joe and Pat for being good sports.
FINAL SCORE 7 UP
Match 3 – Ross & Grant v Daz & Dave
Played together like a well oiled machine today. Won holes 2,3,5,8 and 9 without losing a hole to be 5 up at the turn, Back 9 won 11,14 and 16 being 8 up coming down the last. David from Warlingham hit a great 3 wood to 20 feet holing the putt for 3 net 2 winning their only hole of the day. 7 up to finish.
Great match played in great spirit. The boys from Woldingham great sports and a thoroughly enjoyable day. Hope the return match is as good!
FINAL SCORE 7 UP
Match 4 – Robert & Simon C v James & Mike
Rob and I were the 4th group out. Both of us off 11. Woldingham’s Mike was off 18 and James off 8. Scrappy start but 1st hole halved. 2nd was a win with me sinking a long birdie from just off the back of the green. 3rd and 4th halved. We won the 5th with a standard par. I managed to 2 putt from the back of 6 for a par and a win. I parred 7 again good enough for a win to take us 4 up. I made a mess of 8 but Rob got the half and 9 was halved too. Rob parred 10 for a win. 11 was a half in 4, both rob and I got pars but Mike with a shot got the half. 12th we lost our 1st hole with mike hitting a flush 5 iron 2nd shot into the green and getting a great birdie. Rob and I the won the next 5 holes.
Highlights were Rob’s 8 foot putt par on 15 and my personal hole of the day on 16. Driver, 6 iron to 4ft, birdie. James struggled with his game but managed a great 4 to win the last hole. Final result 7up. Great fun match (obviously!), woldingham lads were very sporting and great company.
FINAL SCORE 7 UP
Match 5 – Scott & Matt v Tom & Josh
It’s Friday and no match report from the YuleJaggs dreamteam so I’ll just add what I know…. which isnt much. The boys seemed to have a laugh going round against the young lads of Woldingham. One of whom seemed to be a long hitter. Chinese whispers on the course was that Scottie and Mattie were 2down, but shaking hands on the 18th it turned out we had won by two holes.
Got the impression Jaggsy’s golf was a bit hot and cold. Ol’ Northern Petal was certainly in the groove returning a 2under gross 70. Solid play and both contributing towards a great team result.
FINAL SCORE 2 UP
————————–x————————–
Great effort from the whole team saw us winning the match 59 to 31 points and most importantly gives us a commanding lead of 54 points over Reigate Hill, reigning champs for the last two years.
Next match is against the old enemy Farleigh in their back garden, so please come and see me if you have any course knowledge or your game is in good check, because we don’t want to this lead and hopefully we can gain back to the trophy on 11 October 2019 at Farleigh on finals day.
Again, please put this date in your diary and let know if you are available to play on that Friday.
