Surrey National take important win over Woldingham at home

30 August, 2014 by Hew Leave a Comment

shillsSurrey Hills on Saturday and we needed a solid win to keep the pressure on Farleigh and catch… if not nudge ahead… of Woldingham who are in a strong position with a couple of matches to go.

Weather was pretty decent and Captain Mark had the troops all fired up with some words of wisdom as we trekked off to the first.  “Hew, don’t be nice, we need to win everything”.  Phil didnt need to be reminded about that and probably had his game face on since 4am that morning.

After being level after 10th, with some indifferent play on the front (we felt we shouldve been a couple up), our game turned on the 12th.  Phil going net birdie, birdie, net birdie had them reeling, with a 50yard pitch from Phil on the 14th hammering into the flag and resting 2″ from the hole.  We came in as the first group winning by 5.

Scottie and Mark then bought it home convincingly winning their match by 6.  Again more shaking of the heads by our opponents as I think Scottie bagged 4 birdies, Mark 2, with only one bad hole between them.    Following matches were very tight.  Al Savs and James Liu halving their game, as did Graham A and Al Golluplampost.  Wayne and Bubba Hance were 5 down when we passed them at the 12th – an ominious score but both had it in them to turn things around.  So it proved when Rob went on a par rampage as he put it, hammering it home with some steady golf and narrowly missing a birdie putt on the last to win the hole and only lose by 1.  Their 13 handicapper opponent was about 3 over after 12 or something too so a great result to bring it back.

Overall we won by 10, thats a swing of 20points (10 off their score, 10 onto ours), which by Mark’s calculations, saw us edge ahead of them by 2.  I’m sure the table will be added to this post when its available.

We have Surrey Downs at home next and need another solid result.  Farleigh have Reigate at home which could be a critical match, and then Woldingham host Farleigh.  Its all getting close but in any case, a solid team effort today all round.
