We knew the day would be wet, forecasts confirming it all week… plus the 5th Ashes test was on at the Oval… so bound to be soggy! So it was a bemusing start as Woldingham did not manage the full team compliment, and not all wanted to go out at play. The Surrey National team were up for it… waterproofs at the ready and with a warm clubhouse in mind at the end of the day!
Myself and Al Saville played Rob Cacket and we tried to make the best of it… Al making a strong start yet Rob managed to keep the spirit of the game in the face of a doubles team. Fair play to all of the 4 Woldingham guys who rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in. Given the game, the weather and the team sitiuation, we all agreed to take the scores at the front nine and halve the remainder. Surrey National took a good win in the end, however we got there, but we unanimously gave the Woldingham guys big props for taking us on in singles.
Captain Sean’s Match Report:
Only 8 turned up from Woldingham and of those only 4 were prepared to play – they went out in singles against pairs. We agreed to halve all the holes on the back nine in each of the four matches – otherwise we felt it would give Surrey National an unfair lead in the league
I would like to praise the sportsmanship of the four Woldingham players who did make the effort to go out:
Dave Strudwick
Keith Buckle
Rob Cacket
Garnet Lewis
Woldingham have to go away to Farleigh next, we’ll be keeping an eye on the score there. Then the big game is when we visit Farliegh towards the end of the September.
