Surrey National take a good win home to Surrey Downs

24 June, 2019 by Hew Leave a Comment

A hot sticky day on Sunday as we hosted the home match against Surrey Downs in the 2019 season of the Surrey Hills League.

About midway through the season, we went into the match level with Surrey Downs in terms of points-difference… proving the mantra about getting a point of half on “every hole” be it at the start or end of the 18.  Might sound like a stuck record about that, but remember a couple years ago we lost out to Farleigh for the title by one or two measly points.   We play the last game of the season away at Surrey Downs so we needed a result at home.   Slightly strange that they played on Saturday and then had a friendly to clash with the away fixture at ours but there we go.

Wayne doing a face-down starfish impression on a pavement earlier in the week meant he was out… so vice-captain James C was in the chair.

Scottie and Tom were out first against their captain Altan and Mark.  Our boys did well and kept their noses in front until missing out on the last 3 holes and coming in with a half.  It was always going to be tough for a low handicap pairing in a Surrey Hills match and it was great golf to keep control for most of the of the game in the face of giving shots.

Winkle and I were out next next against the ‘old face’ that is Trev Dark and debutante Chin. Mark and I had a good game, neither of us producing sparkling golf but certainly dovetailed well.  Winkle chipping in on the first, and holing a long par putt on the ninth to hit the turn 2up (this despite me flinching a short one for a half on the 8th!).  Back nine my driver started working and after both birdieing the 10th we put together some solid golf to ease away and we came in 7up.  All enjoyed the game, well done Trev and Chin.

After his stonking round in the last home match, Kev Perry partnered the very steady James, and he carried on where he left off!  Counting at the end, Kev said he was 22pts on the front.  In the face of that scoring their long hitting opponents did well to keep it to a two hole win for SN.  Well played.

Gritty pairing of Gabriel and Kev Harman up next and scoring 38 and 40pts in their Swindles the day before meant both were in form.  I’ve played Wally from Surrey Downs before, very canny player, but our hosts had no answer to our boys solid play and returned a 3hole win.

Finally Jack and Simon were out against a similarly handicapped pairing.  Chemistry was spot on for this last pairing and again the guests couldn’t meet our scoring and we had a final score of 5up on the card.

Surrey Downs are a good bunch, similar membership profile as us, all down-to-earth guys and its always a great match between our clubs.  On the day we put in a 17pts win which sees us open a smidge of daylight at the top of the league.  Click here to see the current Men’s League standings.

Was a day all pairs worked well together and we produced a great team result.  However, certainly need to keep feet on the ground.  Our last 3 matches this year are away and it’s the away performances which will decide final standings as all teams expect a result at home.
