UPDATED: Surrey National pipped away at Farleigh in Surrey Hills League opener, but we’ll take it

19 April, 2015 by Hew 3 Comments

It was a dry cloudy Spring morning when we trucked off to our first Surrey Hills match of this year – and it was the toughie… Farleigh away.  Led by Captain Winkle, we played the Purple course (Blue then Red nines), and the greens were very very fast for mid Spring, rough trimmed but everywhere extremely dry and firm.

Tom, Danny, Michael, Al, Ben, Winkle Wayne (Scottie scarpered, Phil ill)

Poor old Ben had a mare – driving over his iphone on the way (ask him!) thus being unable to call to say he’d be late.  Thankfully, the team was finalised just before tee off (good man Mr Tweedy for being just about to jump in the car to make up the numbers) and the 5 pairs of Surrey National were up against the hardened battlers of Farleigh.

As usual with Farleigh, banter was thick in the air before during and after the matches.  Wayne and Tom certainly entertained their playing partners with some healthy in-team conversations but lost by two.  An under the weather Phil and myself battled regulars Tony and Simon and held them until the final few holes where some obscene putts and chips saw them take the last few holes and we lost by 3.

Scottie was on fire and went round in one over, and hadnt seen the Blue nine before.  Great scoring and they came in winning by 1 hole.  Danny and Michael thoroughly did the business for our team, coming in with an almost unheard of win at Farleigh by 5 holes.    Ben and Radar Gollampost were the final pair and were also at the recieving end of some solid Farleigh play (“never missed a putt”) and lost by 4.

Overall we were 43.5 to 46.5 in favour of Farleigh.  Sean suggests an away target (if you were to lose away) of being less then 7.  We achieved that and were close to taking the day overall.  Superb job.

I think Scottie’s referring to some rules flagged up by Farleigh (ie, you cannot get a lift down a hill in a buggy if you don’t have a medical reason to be in a buggy!). *shrug* I had the lift but wasnt sure if this was the case in Surrey Hills league, but wasn’t bothered at all – rules are rules and they are there for a reason. Fair enough.

However its something to be aware of in all comps and matches home and away. Farleigh have done this consistently in our matches with them. But I assume its how they all play up there, very very competitively, and that close attention must be a part of it for them.

Oh and Al Savs. I was chatting to Tony (their Capt) in our game yesterday, we were right about that infringement last year, we shouldn’t have had that penalty.

And yes, lets start sabre rattling for the return at home
      🙂
