Hosting the wiley campaigners of Purley Downs today, the Surrey National team of Sean, Al Savs, myself, David B and Simon Greenwood went down fighting 3 games to 2.
I managed a win against Omid 6&5 and Al went down by the same in the game behind. Al played Peter from Purley, a cracking character who, playing off 10, ended the game on the 13th just 3over par gross. At 67 years old, he has been a member of Purley Downs for just over 60 years (sixty), joining it aged 7 when his father was captain. Awesome swing at 67 (at any age really), Al was unfortunately in his sights today… though the older gent spoke too early at the 16th saying “beat that drive sunbeam” to Al who promptly reminded the canny 67 year old how to smash it by reducing 16th to a huge drive and piddly gap wedge.
David went down on the 18th following some confusion over balls on the 17th and Simon came in strongly winning 4&3. Sean played the decider and took it down the 19th. After battling a 17 handicapper who parred the first 5 holes, Sean found himself 4 down before pulling it back to level. He again pulled dormie2 back to all square sinking the putt on the 18th (albeit all round the cup) to put it into extra time. It wasnt to be our day. Great team effort played in a top spirit.
The Swindle was bursting at the seams today – countless all turned up to take advantage of a mild Spring day before the mucky stuff comes in tomorrow. James Murtagh put into yet another solid round to take the wedge with a great 38 on greens that had been given the full drill/sand treatment earlier in the week. Congratulations.
