Bit of a chill in the sunshine. but a fantastic Spring day seeing Surrey National’s opening fixture of the Surrey Hills League away at Farliegh. Winners for past 3 years, Farleigh are the team to beat and we wanted to turn up and build on last years away loss by only 3 holes. We wanted to win on their turf to really set out our stall for this years campaign… second place isnt good enough.
They have a Sun Mountain Pro event there next month and the greens were looking good… quick but true, and if you could put it on line you were rewarded. Steve and I got on quite well with them… bonus is that they even had sand in the bunkers!
Last year they had some very good home wins against other teams – nothing we can do about that except turn up on the day and do the business.
Nice breakfast and the teams were paired up and interestingly both low handicap pairings were put together with of our Tom and Andy taking on Lee and Johnny Harris.
Woody and I went out first against gritty Brian and the young but extremely steady Harry. He got up and down from everywhere, duffed only one chip and missed just one drive. Steve and I had a pair of birdies each, as I think they did. Steve stuck a wood and an iron close on holes 1 and 2 before both of us found the water on the short third. Bit criminal that but set the tone for taking a hole to then give it quickly back. Our opponents played very well, especially Harry, and after the round I think Steve and I were about two over the course as a pair, the Farleigh guys were even or one over. That said, it eventually came to the 17th all square and Steves bogey with a shot took us one up and we halved the last to win by one… only half a roll short from Steve’s putt from being two clear. So one up and a good result after a very competitive game held in the best of spirits.
Barry and Simon put in a fantastic performance against the League Chairman Darrell and last years Farleigh captain Simon. They had no real answer to Simon and Barry, going down by 8 holes. Clearly the result of the day to the newly paired Simon and Bazz, well done both.
Andy and Tom were up against their two lowest players, young Lee and the day’s other cabbie, a certain vocal Johnny Harris. With Tom having an off day by his own admission, they were down by 8 after 15 but dug in and pulled it out on the last two holes to lose by 6. Pulling back those last holes made all the difference.
Bubba Hance and Simon Lavelle fought a decent game but in the end went down by 3 to Steve and Dan – who could hit the ball a mile off of 7 apparently. Special thanks to Wayne who took a photo of Rob’s drive off the first (see below). Hitting it barely 5 yards (!!), Rob kept driver in hand and in frustration smashed it, pure’ing down the the middle and apparently managed to help half the hole in 6. We don’t care how it happens but a half’s a half in this format!
Finally Dave Page and Wayne (complete with shorts, woolly hat and shades) came in from another hard fought game against Alex and Farleigh character Graham, missing out on the last to come in just one down.
So the end result was 45.5 to 44.5 in favour of Farleigh.
Our best result to date and a fantastic team performance – really well done all. I was a little disappointed as I felt they were there for the taking today… and we all mulled over putts and holes left out there BUT all in all we’ll take it. What we need to do is take the same focus and determination into all of the games… no slips…. as today proved, every hole counts whether you are 5 up or 5 down.
Next up Reigate away on Sunday 5th June. Bring em on.
