Been a tough league this year with Reigate Hill running away with it out in front. I think all teams have been finding it tough against them as they’ve put out some very low handicap/high handicap pairings. Surrey National have certainly put the effort in in every match but its really not been our year.
Woldingham have been strong this year with a team with good pairings and very steady handicaps, and they sit now 2nd with Surrey National fighting it out at the other end against Surrey Downs. Click here to see the current Mens 2018 Fixtures and results.
Sunday saw us head over to Woldingham and it turned out to be a tough match.
Wayne and Tom were out first. Wild Wayne playing well despite gammy ankle/nose/everything and his apparent 43points together with the Beef battled away and to come in winning by two. Wasn’t Mr Winkle’s day it seems but Ritchie and Mark fought out a hard match and even nicked one or two back at the end but in the end went down by 5. Their 5 handicapper played especially well it seems, 4 or 5 birdies in the first 6 holes I think?
Mr Loveless and I had a good game against their Club Captain Mark and young Riz. Riz played very well off 11, hitting a long ball and some great irons. We were down by 2 or 3 most of the match but got it back to 1 standing on the 18th. However, after pushing his drive far right on the 18th, Riz found a line, a lie and then flushed his 4iron to about 15feet on the par5 last. Not much we can do about that and we finished 2down.
Steve Atkinson and Rob were in next and were clearly a good partnership against their Woldingham opponents. We heard the shout that Steve chipped in on the 17th and they came in winning by 2holes. Last in were Tweedy and Simon G, on paper a very steady pairing but came up against two very determined 12-handicappers including their team captain this year George. Down throughout the match I think, they did well to come in 3 down from being 5 down at one point.
Well done all.
We were hearing that the day before that in their Swindle/roll-up they were all scoring 38 to about 42points! At one point we were hearing all matches we down by 2-5 holes so at end going down by 6 wasn’t too bad a result.
