Surrey National go down by 12 to Reigate Hill away

3 June, 2018 by Hew Leave a Comment

Another fantastic hot humid day saw Surrey National travel to Reigate in the Surrey Hills League.  It was our second game of 2018, and Captain Jaggsy had us all in place, pairs sorted and we faced up against a strong Reigate team who are holders of the Surrey Hills title.  Their club shirts even have it printed on the sleeves!

Reigate Brian’s hole in one

Wayne and Scottie were out first with Scottie under big pressure to finish in time for work!  Very much a team game in Surrey Hills, both overall as a team and as a pair, and though Wayne by his own admission didnt have his best day, our boys put up a good fight, helped by some stonking Scottie play, and returned winners by 2.

TeamCarter out next.  Luke smashing it into next week, and the odd other fairway, it was another very close match, our boys missing out by two.  Dan D and Steve came in next losing out by 3 to a very tough Reigate pairing with the first of their +1 handicap players.

Jaggsy and I were next out and from the start we were up against it.  Ben off +1 was very solid, he literally didn’t miss a shot and despite a matchplay format, and one or two putts awarded from a couple of feet when the hole was won, he was was at least 7 or 8 under gross.  If he wasn’t holing for birdie, his partner Brian was using his shots well and taking holes.

With halved holes feeling like a win, we actually only won 2 holes between us but to be honest neither of us played that well.  When Ben knocked in an eagle on the par5 14th, Brian then stepped up on the par3 15th and holed his 7iron for his first ever hole in one.

We lost by 6 which sounds poor, but it looked even moodier earlier on!  Winkle and The Feez bought in the final game, with Lee on his 2nd of 3 rounds of the day!  A heap of shots were given to their wiley opponents and despite Lee smashing it a country mile and in-form Winkle plugging away, they came in 3down.

So 12pts down, but being away from home, against a team with some very strong pairings, not too bad a day overall.
