A cracking weekend of mid Autumn weather – I was in t-shirts for both days – and I make no apologies for the sight of me stripping off the Under Armor… no doubt putting several off their games. Mild temperature and a only smidge of rain on Saturday, not bad… but Sunday was just perfect with clear sky and sun. You would have expected the course to be ripped up but only a few good scores posted in the Swindles. Expected….
Friendly Match @Home vs Couldson
On Saturday, the pairings of Jez Richardson and Club Captain Paul, Clive and Brian C, Richie and ‘Bubba’ Hance, and myself n’ Jezza Assig… took on a Couldson eight in the regular friendly match between the clubs held this year at Surrey National.
Home I think is a strong advantage over the fairly flat Couldson course (not played there myself yet), and so it proved across the games. All games apparently played in a great spirit, Surrey National took all four games, 2&1, 5&4, 5&4 and 4&3 in respective order to the teams above. Well done all.
In our fourball, Jerry and I took on Jim and Mick from Couldson. After losing the first to par, we then took the next two and felt in control. Front nine turned on the 6th and 8th. A very ambitious cut 3wood from the hill on the 6th saw my ball go arrow straight into the trees on the left. With Jezza out of it, we both assumed my ball lost only for our opponents to graciously buggy over and found it had bounced out from the hedge, pin high, beside the treeline. A good sand iron and putt, and from a supposed lost ball and hole, we took the shot hole with a par.
Jezza slung his tee shot down the 8th into the right rough quite away short of the bunker. He then unleashed a 3wood from the rough, landing it between the greenside bunkers rolling to the middle. A quick, long two-putt from Mr Assig for a solid par, our opponents weren’t aware of Jezza’s shot-heroics, and found their two putt bogey wasnt enough for a half. Back nine we remained solid despite losing the 11th and 12th to bring things close. I managed to stick a 6iron close for gimmie birdie into the par5 14th and Jerry’s par on the 15th saw us all shaking hands. Course perhaps a tad long for our opponents but we all thoroughly enjoyed the game.
Nice sos and mash after and talk clearly suggested we don’t wait a year for the annual return match and perhaps arrange something in the Spring. Top chaps from Couldson and we all look forward to heading over to their patch for the next game.
Jaggsy came in with the win on Saturday with a strong 36… more overdue cuts there Mr Jaggs.
Sunday saw Simon Christian take on James M in Swindle KO, winning that 4&3 I think…to play me in the next round. My hopes are not high against the dangerous Mr Christian!
Brian C and Bryan H slugged it out with some pretty naff golf on both sides it seems. Fresh from tour monies and some good form, Brian C took it eventually took it with a halved bogey on the last after going dormie2.
Simon took a healthy wedge home on Sunday taking the overall and back I believe (and a pin)… with 33. Not great scoring across the board, but Scottie’s 29 off plus1 is of special note… cut again and winning nowt 🙁 Well done Simon.
