Weather promised rain rain and more rain. “Monsoon month” some tabloids are calling the rest of June – should be wet and humid… nice for ducks, not so nice for golf. We all arrived around half9 to rain and it didnt look good for the rest of the day. However, the promised downpour at 1pm didnt happen and after we tee’d off after the ladies at half10, it only took about 5 or 6 holes and rain gear was stowed and we had a decent if humid day.
Smarting after an away win at their place last week, Reigate no doubt wanted to repeat our score at our gaff. Play order was tweaked and it largely all worked out. A couple of their pairings were low/high handicaps but we expected that, we just needed to focus on scoring well as a pair and see how they stacked up against it.
Wayne and Bubba Hance headed out first against steady David Byrne off 8 and Dean off 22. Some fantastic form by the home pairing was too good for the visitors, Wayne and Rob winning by 9 coming in 13.5 to 4.5 winners. Set a very good marker for the remaining matches.
Andy and Stu were up against it in their match, Dan the 16 handicapper had a worldy, scoring a stableford off 44 points.! Barely a shot or two over par as a pairing, Stu even had a tap in birdie on the 18 for only a half. Ground it out well but came in losing 10:8.
With Danny out of action, Graham (Adams) stepped up to partner Gorilla Austin. Tom played very well, playing to his handicap and Mr Adams played very well on the back9. Though there were some contributions on the front too I was told! Solid win for Tom and graham, winning 11:7.
Scottie and Jaggsy pairing came up trumps too. A giggling Scottie was amused by Mr Jaggs off the 9th tee – Monsieur LeJaggs heaving a massive push cut on the 9th which merited a very throaty “FORE” for someone on 1st fairway (or 2nd!). Another good win and they came in winning 10.5: 7.5.
Steve and I were in the last slot against Paul and Matt. We started well, hitting the turn one under as a pairing and 2up after a gaggle of solid good pars and a birdie on 3rd. Matt and Paul were up against us both playing well, and we continued it into the back nine coming back level as a pair. I think we both played to or under our handicap dovetailing well when needed. Slightly disappointed to lose the last hole as they had a shot but we took the game by 5, 11.5:6.5.
Fantastic team result, we won by 19points…. 54.5 : 35.5.
Everyone played their part. Despite their 10:8 team loss, reducing the game to 2points when a 15 handicapper with shots scores 44 points is a great result for Andy and Stu.
Every hole counts in Surrey Hills format… cracking result to take forward – really well done all.
Next match is away at Surrey Downs on 25th June. Arguably its not home form that wins the Surrey Hills, but what you can get away – lets give them a proper game!
