A great day for golf today – bright sunnny and a healthy breeze to “make it interesting”.
On the back of the narrowest of away losses to the fancied Farleigh a few weeks ago, we really wanted a good result to justify some decent golf and some determined play. Reigate’s Club Champs arent until late July, and the course was quite soft for early Summer – the greens were quite slow and woolly. I really didnt get on with them at all. Given the length of the cut, you either had to smash it to get to the hole, or (if you were down cut) watch them slide and bobble away. Front nine especially weren’t very good, but apparently compared to a few weeks ago they aren’t bad at all.
Pairings were setup and Mark from Reigate clearly had a plan and put out a 4 handicapper with a 22, and himself (3) with an 18 handicapper. So a bundle of shots given which I noted to him… he had his plan but we had to head out against them regardless.
Steve and I played Ben off 2, and Martin off 9. I didnt have the best of front nines, losing 4 balls (!) but managed to come in on a couple. Steve “Strong Shoulders” Woods played very well, and after I stopped losing balls by going to a cheaper brand (obviously!), we both steadied the ship. Steve continued his good play coming in overall with 42 points off handicap. Ben is in the Surrey County team, and recently joined Reigate. His ball striking was fantastic, and went round level par. Martin didnt have the best of days and couldn’t convert some good approach shots especially his shot over the water on the par5 15th. Playing slightly better on the back 9 (ok, I did), we started to have both balls on the green and in play… which produced a strong finish taking 3 out of the last 4 to come in winning by 4-up (11-7). Steve’s topped drive off the 18th, topped 4-wood travelling at least 100yards along to ground to 12 feet… had them sratching their heads and us shaking hands as Ben had to roll in yet another birdie to only half the final hole.
So a good start, followed in by Messrs Yule and Jaggs. Jaggsy saw quite a lot of the course from what Steve and I could see playing in front of them. A chunked 7 iron “lay up” into the middle of the lake of the par5 15th was an interesting shot to observe. Playing a 4 and 22 handicapper, TeamYuleJaggs played very well from being a few down early on to finishing on the 18th one-up (9.5 to 8.5).
Lee “I’ve only had 2 hours sleep” Feez and Tom (I’m a Gorilla) Austin were paired up together against a 6 and 13 handicapper so were giving a few shots. Hole contributions were added up by Tom and had himself featuring almost exclusively on the front, with Lee coming in on the back. It wasn’t to be at the end, and they came in 2-down (8 to 10).
Baz Sweetman and Simon Christian pairing were up next two 16 handicappers. Both put a great performance at Farleigh and they continued today. Steady play from both returned a very impressive 4-up (11 to 7) against a relatively high handicap pairing they probably thought would be a banker. Good job.
Wayne and steady Simon Lavelle came in the final pairing against their team Captain Mark playing off 3 and Andy playing off 18. A very canny Reigate pairing but Wayne and Simon were up for the task. We won’t mention Simon’s duffs on the 18 (sorry Simon), but a very close match (“that was a battle” Wayne said), they shook hands all square.
So a fantastic team result, we won by 7….. 48.5 to 41.5. Well done all.
Reigate had beaten Farleigh at home already, making an away win even sweeter. We’re hosting them next Sunday… we need to not just hold our own, but build on this result to do the double on them.
Sumbited by Mr CC Loveless, here’s our Club Captain at 6.30am on Saturday… all ready and prepared for our “smiling faces” that early in the day. Well done Joe!
