Muggy, sticky end-of-summer day today and the threatened rain didn’t appear which was good. Two home games to go in this year’s Surrey Hills campaign and we were entertaining our ‘sister’ club Woldingham. Lots of familiar faces in the Woldingham boys, they were all in very good time and raring to go.
Breakfasts sorted, traditional late appearance by Mr Massey Jnr and we were fed, teams sorted and up for it. “Every point” mumbled by me, we all know the plan… we just needed to pull it together and setup the last match. Very solid team again and with reserves itching to play. Not straightfoward to narrow the squad down for each match but we had everyone setup and ready.
Tom and Al led the team out. Approaching the 8th green, The Beeeeef told me
After 4 holes, I wanted to take off my wedding ring and give it to Al
Nice. The Tom and Al love-in proved extremely effective in the top match. 8 up after 11, the boys were somewhat surprised to have a handshake offered by the Woldingham boys who hadn’t realised it was an 18 hole format. The guests did rally somewhat after that, only going one hole further down and Tom and Al rolled in a mighty 9 holes up to really setup the day. Fantastic result.
Woody and I had a long hard battle against Chris and Phil. We went 2 up fairly early on with a birdie and some solid pars but despite not having a great day Chris played his two shot holes very well and Phil remainined steady using his 8 shots to good effect. Woody and I were around or on handicap but we only hit the turn level before Phil bounced the approach bunkers on the 11th after a naff drive and then dropped the 25footer in for the win. One down for the next few holes, we nicked another hole and eventually came to the 18th all square. Pushed drives from both Steve and I off the tee and we were on the backfoot… just losing out and unfortunately coming in 1 down.
Better news behind us. Al Gollamppost and Danny-with-the-stripy-shirt were against canny Jim and Keith. Solid play from the boys and we especially we saw some cracking shots into the par 3’s behind us and they came in winning by 3.
Jay and Andy in next. Jay was slightly disgruntled just bogeying the 18th and missing out on a gross level par round. Not playing for a couple of weeks, Jay clearly put a good round in dovetailing well with Andy, I heard once again that Mr Massey was dropping putts from everywhere. Another solid partnership and our boys came in winning by 5.
Jaggsy (held by Woldingham in previous years to be a very “dangerous” player) and Scottie came in at the end. Another very tough match by all accounts, Woldingham pairing producing a very good back nine but the boys hung in there only to come in again 1down.
So overall, the result was a home win 52.5 vs 37.5.
Very well done. The boys who won, won well… sticking to the “… every hole” mantra… some great golf. Fantastic. Woody and I were perhaps rueing some missed opportunities, Scottie and Jaggsy hanging on against some great Woldingham play but overally another very solid team effort which sets us up against Surrey Downs in the final game.
Good arrows chaps. Tip top captaining Hew.
Hahahaha. I’m deffo renewing my vows with Al next week!! I’ve finally found my golf wife
