In one of the more bizarre results of the Surrey Hills season, Surrey National half all 5 paired games in the away match against Reigate Hills.
Thank you, that is all..
Well, for a few more words…
Turning up today for Reigate and their course was looking great. Some decent Spring growth and their fairways and greens looked supremely presentable. Though not fast, their greens were true… if a little slow for some.
However, consistency and a true roll is all you need and the greens ticked that box.
Yes, all five pairs halved against their opponents.
Danny B(etts) and myself saw an early 1-hole up lead from the 2nd (I was chuffed to end up 8inches from the hole on the par3 2nd), but this quickly disappeared after the 4th and after some fantastically inconsistent play from us both we were soon 3 down. Some determined play on the back9 with some convenient dovetailing, and we put our heads together to spark a bit of a comeback with 3 holes on the trott.
Our opponent Andy holed some decent putts on the 16th, 17th and 18th to arrest our comeback proper and a half in our match was probably the fairest result.
Some more determined play from Reigate in the closing holes helped more matches draw level and honours were even across the board.
Playing behind us, Nick Brown was booming some drives and his ball was popping up near a few par4’s as we walked off greens. His opponents were very impressed.
Tom and Wayne bashed out a half despite some entertainment on the 18th (Tom not happy with a putt?), Dave Page fistpumped his way to a putt on the 18th to half with teammate Nick, “Radar” Gollop and “Athletic” Ben copped a fard fought half against their team and No1 in-form Mr J Vicars notched up a half with our top fearless, sweary, we’ll-take-them-all-on-no-prisoners-Captain Mr Mark Wheddon.
Great weather, all close games, Reigate looking great… a superb Surrey Hills game. Well done all.
