Some last minute call ups and we had five of us heading down to The Drift Golf Club for an away match in the Scratch Cup today. Scottie used to be a member (but it was a few years ago) and the rest of us, TeamCapt Andy G, myself, Young Peter and Tony hadn’t played there before at all.
Day was bright and I played all 18holes in a t-shirt despite the weather misbehaving as it had done during the week, we even had a brief snow/sleet shower half way round. Bizarre.
I went out first against young Ed a 2handicapper. Promptly gave away the first two holes with a comedy hit-the-tree-bounce-out of bounds on the first and driving it into a fairway bunker on the 2nd. Birdied next two holes and from early thoughts after 2holes of ‘ruh oh this could get messy’, I was back level with Ed and the rest of the round remained close. Very good match, Ed had been out the night before which probably helped me as off the tee he unusually missed a few fairways pushing them right for him. After halving the 16th with a pair of birdies between us, I was dormie two until I drove into a ditch on the 17th and after a comedy attempt to get out, had to concede the hole when I (evenutally) got to the green. Another poor drivefrom me on the 18th and we had to take it down the 1st again as every game needed to play out to a win.
Good drive (for a change) saw me find fairway and after a pushed 5iron right, I hit a solid chip to 5foot and made the putt after Ed’s chip back went long after a towering approach from the fairway.
Greens weren’t great still recovering from hollowtining but still ran quite well. Lovely course with some small greens and large run off areas, all treelined, tight but not long. Really enjoyed the required positional play off the tee with 3woods and long irons.
Peter fought out a hard game in the match behind me and from being two up came to the 18th all square and he managed to win the last to take it from a tricky spot on the righthand side of the very nice par5 finishing hole. 79 was it Peter? Well played.
Andy went out 3rd and his match turned out to be the decider. Scottie didnt have a good day at the office with his 6handicapper booming some massive drives and went down 5&4. Tony was up against it in the 5th match, and despite hitting it well, also went down by same amount.
So Andy headed out to the 19th not knowing the scores from other games, and unfortunately didnt manage the win.
So overall a very good match, we lost 3-2 against a good bunch of lads. Andy mumbled something about “The Mass won’t be happy” but I think we did really well given none of us really knew the course at all. Cracking course, lovely clubhouse and facilities, we just couldnt manage the win on the day.
