Phil’s birthday 4-club challenge

31 December, 2013 by Hew Leave a Comment

Someone clearly had a word upstairs because the weekend of Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th saw two cracking days of Winter weather sandwiched inbetween some gawd awful wind and rain.  No rain (bee-limy!), bright low Winter sun and barely a breeze on both days – Saturday saw a very healthy Swindle turnout after Christmas, Janine I think taking the honours.

Sunday saw the much talked about 4-club challenge setup by Phil to help celebrate his birthday.  It was going to be 3 clubs, but a certain Mr Adams made some noises and we settled on 4.  Probably something about not being parted from more than two of his shiny new irons.   Much debate was had over club selection (again led by Mr Adams… 7 or 6 Graham?).  Anyway, the field was 32-ish I think (?) with a couple of Phil’s guests and some old faces turning up for the day.

Prize giving at the 4-club challenge

Club selections ranged from drivers or 3woods, 9irons or wedges, 6irons or 7’s.  Clearly caught everyone’s imagination and no doubt we will do this again soon… perhaps taking it further with a 3-club challenge.

And over to the £££ prizes…

Overall Winner (and a fantastic nearest-the-pin on the 7th) was Phil’s mate Big Wayne.
Second Overall: Greg Reid
Third Overall: James Murtagh

The Team game was halved by Steve Mac’s team (Steve, Tracey, Mushi and Al Sav) and Greg’s team (Big Wayne, Greg, Lorriaine and James M)….  I think this format of best two scores of each hole in the 4ball worked very well on the day.  Certainly added to the individual stableford scoring – it’s something I’d suggest for Swindle days to add a team game, but takes a bit more working out, especially managing three and four ball scores.

Nearest the pin on 3rd was Brian C, 13th was Mushi.
Longest drive was Lee.

An excellent day, tailed with food back at Phil’s prepared by Jane who I think slaved most of the afternoon to put on the spread.
