A repeat of last year’s final, Phil and I took on the might of David and Rob Jackson on Saturday in the slightly delayed Winter Greensomes 7day final.
Weather was fantastic, course in good nick although Tuesday’s ‘pencil’ hollowtining and sanding reduced the speed of the greens to a slugfest… hit it hard!
We had 3 shots from the Jacksons and opened up with two steady pars, both pairings missing birdie putts.
Off of 1, David’s ball striking was very impressive and he was cracking the ball a mile off the tee.
3rd lost to a par, I hoiked mine into the wet and despite a half decent chip from Phil’s ball we couldnt get out of jail. 4th halved in par’s with Phil threading the ball into the green from the right side. 5th lost to a par after Rob converted David’s massive drive to just short of the green.
We chipped away getting it back to level at the turn but never more than a hole in it.
We both missed 3 short putts to consolidate a lead but we were all battling away and ended up all square after the 13th.
My driving started to click on the back nine and with Phil’s steady putting we put together some holes and won the 14th, 15th and 16th to end up 2up with 2 to play.
Some big drives off the 17th and we were lucky enough to require them to birdie. Phil found the ‘fat’ of the green with his chip and their 8ft putt slid by the hole and we were lucky enough to take the win 2&1.
A great close game (again) with David and Rob played in great spirit, thanks to them both.
