I played with Phil Macve in the Seniors roll up on Monday.
From the start Phil was swinging very smoothly and hitting down the middle with ease. After 9 holes Phil had 23 points despite a couple of missed putts. Phil continued to play well and we arrived at the 18th hole and Phil had 20 points already in the bag on the back nine.
Three shots later Phil was in the bunker at he back 18th green and the ball had come to rest against the sleeper which gave him no shot. Phil took a drop. The question was was it a free drop or a drop under penalty. We were unsure.
Phil made the green and then putted out for a 5 or 6. We went to the clubhouse and asked for a ruling from Rory behind the desk. At first Rory thought it was a free drop, but after further consultations in the clubhouse it was decided that the sleeper was an integral part of the course and the drop was under penalty. Result therefore 44pts and a two stoke cut for Phil winner of the roll up by 5 points.
[Addendum by Hew]
Mr Macve, cut to 15.1 from the earlier Vets comp, then played with Jez P, Scottie, Tom and myself in the afternoon on an empty course for 18holes. Very impressive to watch, his cracking form continued and he returned a gross 84 – this time off the whites – beating his all time best at Surrey National by one shot. Well played.
