Soggy weekend for the last stableford of the year. I’d heard previously (admittedly from Kieran) that this was the last comp and we had Dan D, Lee Feez and Al Savs fighting it out for top honours. However, I was sooner put in order from various sources (*shrug*) that there was one more comp to go – a medal. Certainly not enough medals for me in the calendar, can’t see why March and perhaps November cant have medals in them… but I suspect that wouldn’t be popular!
I was out in the last slot at the back of the comp with Lee The Feez and Boney. We had a good round played in top spirits, though it wasn’t Lee’s day on the scorecard. Off the tee, and despite cycling 14Km there and 14Km home in prep for his big cycle ride, The Feez was hitting an immense ball. Surely only behind Jacko in being longest off the tee in the club, it was slightly perturbing to be casually zapping a pin distance from the fairway (if I was lucky), only to spot Lee with his own range finder confirming exactly how many 10’s of yards I was behind him. A tad disconcerting. Barry Ashlin came in the winner on the day with 37.
Lee and Dan D didn’t have the best of days but Al Savs managed to come in with a very steady 33 for some OoM points. Well done Al. RitchieBandit (aka the self-titled ‘Big Dog‘) swiped the Swindle win and monies.
Rain hung around on Sunday, greens were ok but the drizzle/rain made the ground fairly swampy in places. Some great scoring in wetter conditions than Saturday – Tony Stone returning a very impressive 41pts to take the overall weekend win, Mushi had 37 for 4th overall, and I see ol Northern Petal had 34pts off 3… possibly lowest gross but for some reason that report not available on MasterScoreboard.
Winter Greensomes Mixed Final
Heather and I played Bohwon and Jo in the Mixed Finals in a slot after the comp and behing a couple pay n’ player groups. Pace was poor (if not surprising), and seeing the play and payers try and hit the ball in front of us, not giving a toss about replacing the dustbin sized lids they were generating really wound me up. I’d have them and a heap of others taken off the course and banned. But then again, seeing the amount of unreplaced divots from members on a weekend, it hardly suggests much collective care about the course.
Moving on *breath Hew*, we had a very close Greensomes match. Never up in the match, Heather and I gave a hefty 7 shots in the Greensomes match, against Jo, the Byron Cup finalist, and Bohwon the Ladies Champ. We clawed our way back to level walking off the 15th, but lost the 16th to a gross 5 against a shot, halved the 17th in pars but lost the 18th to a gross 5 against a shot.
Cracking match, and seriously well done Bohwon and Jo for taking the Mixed Winters title! Well done both.
Surrey Fives (A or B?) vs Richmond Park GC
Meanwhile, a match behind us, Surrey Fives team played a home fixture against Richmond Park. Some close matches I think, with some excessive mumbling from Winkle about his poor front 9, but I hear that in the end our boys came in 4-1 winners and march on to the next round. Well done the team.
Order of Merit standings
So, at the end of the weekend we have one medal left towards the end of in April. It is all to play for amongst the 3 out in front.
Al Savs has a wee gap now but there are – as I understand it – five more overall OoM points up for grabs in a medal. I think the plan is to perhaps have Al, Dan and Lee out in a final 3ball… I suspect on Saturday as its when they may all play together. Nothing confirmed but I hope the club lets members know and we can welcome them all in on the day. Whatever happens, good luck to all 3.
