Swindle Day, or the ‘fun’ day
Cracking late October weather today as a full compliment of 28 turned up for the day. As for the pace of play, let me quote Mushi by saying “Boy-oh-boy”… a quick round it wasn’t. Not a surprise but kudos to all for getting round in a 5 and a half hours (or a tad more) of 18 holes. Always going to be slow after the Ryder Cup and us being 7 groups of 4balls, but we all managed it. The Pistols seemed ok in the bar following us. Well, I say ok, they were all in the bar so I assume they were generally happy (… or at least ‘happier’).
Out in the last group, Janine, Al Gol and James M and I had a great round even if the golf was hardly sparkling (especially on the front9). Saying that, Janine’s driving was just immense all day. Our fourball had two 15’s and two 14’s for a fairly ropey front 9, but I think we each came back in a much healthier 19pts on the back. Lampost and I were convincingly smashed in our fourball match thanks to Janine’s solid play and James chipping in when required. We just didn’t get close to them.
Turns out one Matthew Strong won the day! I think Kieran was especially pleased having seen Matt recently for a few lessons, and as Jaggsy put on a Whatsapp group that afternoon about Strongbow… “He’s back!”. Huge congrats to Matt, well played mate… deserved winner.
The idea of the day was 1) to have a decent game of golf with mates, 2) spread the winnings if we can, and 3) put some pennies towards the website and domain costs.
I think we got there on all three counts and had a bundle of prizes to hand out to spread the c$$$sh…
|Overall Winner||Matt Strong|
|3rd place||Graham R|
|Team Prize||Scottie, Jez, Lee and Sharon Snashers|
|Pin 13th||Kieran (who was very glad it didn’t drop!)|
|Longest Drive||Al Gollop|
|15th Place||Al Gollop|
|20th Place||Ian Fowler|
|Sweeptstake Winner||Al Gollop|
A few lessons learned from the day I think, a few things to maybe tweak for the next ‘fun’ day but I think the change in format worked well. Everyone seemed to have a good day.
Big thanks to Matt, who helped with the cards and the scoring.
Great to see The Jezzlar Assig looking well and and out n’ about for 18holes. Guests Keiran, Daisy and Graham were most welcome for the day’s play and to Al Savs who was let out by “the boss” to play just a week or so after his 2nd daughter arrived! And lets hope the TullyMonster gets over the tonsilitus soon.
Daisy is off to Australia soon for a years working with Gary Edwin to confirm her Right Sided golf accreditation soon (and basically have a blinding year away). I’m sure we all will wish her the best.
Finally, big thanks to everyone who came along. Monies left over (and yes it was all calculated and accounted for Philip), went towards the website domain and hosting which I’ve been sorting out these past 5 or 6 years. Much appreciated.
I think we’ll have another day in the Spring, a bigger comp with all the Originals and regulars who couldn’t make today. We’ll make that a “Championship” Day or something, complete with cheesy trophy and prizes. I reckon we’ll need at least 9 tee times with any luck… yes it would be to again help out website costs a smidge, but also to have a good Swindle day of golf (+ beers).
England U17 win the World Cup
And finally, a fantastic result this afternoon from the U17 team. From being 2nil down, they ran out winners 5-2 against Spain.
Thanks again to everyone in making the day a solid success.
