We needed a convincing win here against The Bashers after our last drumming by the Pistols.
Richie and myself out first against Ali and Alan, we started par, birdie, to go 2 up, I chipped in from off of the green on two so all looked good. We dovetailed really well, hardly ever both coming in or crashing on a hole together, Richie made a great par on 9 for us to go 2 up at the turn and we were 3 up at one point on the back, looked quite comfortable, never down.
However, come the 18th we were only one up and we all hit pretty poor tee shots, mine the worse and it left me 160 in to the pin after a decent rescue out of the rough, not really my type of shot as I am regularly hitting a 70 yard sand wedge into 18, however, kept my head down and flushed it to about 4 foot, we didn’t need the putt, that was it, they shook hands. A good match in good company, Richie was a great partner and Ali and Alan, very sporting chaps to play against. So we sat in the bar waiting for the rest of the victories to roll in, however it didn’t quite work out like that.
I had posted a message ‘first blood to Swashbucklers’ and after the next three results, was wondering if it should have read, ‘only blood’.
The next five matches were lost, some quite tight though, Hew and Dan T and Lee Feez only losing one down, Lee to an on form James Carter. Scotty’s is a story for another time and it just left Snasher and Winkle out there.
It had been some time too, we heard that Winkle was 3 down at one point so it didn’t seem hopeful although personally, I was, having played with and against the mini-marvel many times in the last three months and lost many bucks.
His game has reached new heights and he has always been a fighter so we waited in hopeful anticipation. At the risk of spooking him, The Snasher rarely loses so I sort of knew there was another win coming worse way but to our delight and thankfully to save another drumming, they both came in smiling, Mark had come back from the dead to beat Bob English one up and Snasher beat Pat Kinnear 2 and 1.
Well done guys, it leaves us with some hope of making the last day!
Oh, forgot, thank you to Matt j for standing as reserve and being there bang on time, all kitted up and ready to go. Thanks to, to Simon Greenwood and Alan Savile who had both said they were available but not on top form. This is very honest and very helpful when picking a team, thank you guys.
Thanks also, to Lee F and Mark for all the pre match support.
Well done to ‘pesky’ Greg & Geoff who pipped myself and Dan TullyMonster on the 18th.
We had a good 18 holes, all playing to handicap and in the competitive spirit of the match a healthy amount of banter on our way round.
