What can we say about yesterdays result, home against Farleigh ! Well firstly the weather was beautiful, the breakfast was lovely and the course was in great condition.
As expected Farleigh arrived with all there normal banter and bravado “all single figure handicappers who could drive most of our greens” their words not mine, Although as suspected they underestimated our course !
We had some last minute changes to the team. Unfortunately Andy was not fully fit and was swiftly replaced with Wayne and Ben was unable to join us at the last minute. This meant I had to go onto the course and pull Steve from the swindle match 🙂 but still some excellent pairings.
All matches started in good spirit (although a couple ended very differently). Our first pairing consisted of Tom and Tweedy who quickly shot off into the distance. It appears this match was very one-sided with our boys playing some inspired golf. I’m told a discussion over a ruling made for some interesting final holes, but it spurred our boys on to a massive winning start by 8 points. Hole 19 was absence of the Farleigh boys who had to leave straight after !
Team two was the recently pulled in Steve and new to the squad Matt Jaggs. Again some not very happy opposition after this match as Matt scored 40 something points of 17, a handicap they challenged throughout and after the match. Another 2 point home victory.
Team 3 was Scotty and myself, we played some steady golf throughout the front holes although two mistakes and some excellent birdies saw us two down after 8. However we rallied well from the 9th tee. Firstly winning the ninth with my shot and then Scotty birdieing the next three holes 🙂 After this the match was quite firmly won. 2 more points in the bag.
Match 4 consisted of Hew and Danny ( the steady Hew with the dynamic Danny ) was another comfortable victory and a further 3 points. And finally match 5 saw the new team pairing of Dave and Wayne, again another Steady and dynamic pairing come in with a 4 point win.
So in total we bear Farleigh by 19 points (54.5 vs 35.5) which has of course seen us shoot up the league table to joint second place behind Surrey Downs, who have played all there matches. Below is a sneak preview of what I believe the table will now look like, and yes we are ahead of Farleigh:
So onto our final match and it’s all still to play for. Another big win on Saturday 29th of August (home to Woldingham) will definitely see us take pole position . We can then sit back and watch the final results with baited breath 🙂
Danny and I ground out a result from our match. Farleigh Paul was especially steady off of 9, cracking the ball a mile despite only scoring 22 pts at Foxhills the day before. I was steady tee-to-green but Danny was in top putting form, sinking anything from 6feet or less…. meaning I could have free rolls for birdies! We only both screwed up the 8th and with their guy matching our par on the 9th but with a shot we ended up all square at the turn.
Game changed on the 11th with Danny holing a 25footer down the green to take the hole, then I snaked a swingy birdie putt in on the 12th for the win. Some solid pars and by taking the 16th to go 3up we each parred the last two and ended up winning by 3 at the end.
It couldve been more except for their stubborn, solid play, you’d expect nothing less from Farleigh, and we whilst we were two under gross as a team for the round, they were only one over.
Of special note is Danny’s drive off the 17th, taqlk about making a statement. I thought I’d hit a pearler out of the middle till Danny “Big Levers” Betts unleashed his best drive of the day on the 17th to drive the green.
We won’t mention the 3putt though. Heh!
