The Originals lost their second Interswindle Ryder Cup match against Bob’s Bashers 12-4. After our excellent first victory, we fielded the same team but this time came up against opponents playing at the top of their game and who are definitely the side to beat this season.
Barry and Martin got us off to a great start, quickly going 3 up against Peter Wheeler and Greg, and despite a fightback were 1 up playing 18 and closed the match out.
Next John and I played James and Luke Carter, and we were soon 3 down. We fought back to one down at the turn but after a bad tenth hole, and Johns excellent bunker shot on 11 for a tap in par being quickly negated by Luke’s long birdie putt from the fringe, we were unable to get back at them, eventually losing on the 15th four and three.
Jezza and Rob played Doug and Alastair who were unplayable on the day (there is a bit of a recurring theme coming now!) and lost 5 and 4.
Bob and Colin had a great battle against Ralph and Graham, fighting back from 3 down to all square after 15, but Ralph’s long putt on 16 put them one down and they lost 2 and 1.
So in the clubhouse we waited nervously for the singles.
Paul was playing Guy, and Graham Loveless Peter le Cren, and coming down 18 both matches appeared to be live. Graham, playing to the audience bounced his ball off the top of the sleepers to the back of the green, but when Guy picked his ball up from the front of the green we realised that he had either lost already (he had 3 and 2) or had just decided he couldn’t play against such precision. Another fine win for our talisman. Paul after an extremely close match of excellent golf, missed his putt at the last for Guy to seal the points 1 up.
In the last pairings Graham A played to his handicap but could not prevent a rampant Bob English winning 2 and 1. Finally Bryan faced Paul Delaney who was simply unplayable on the day, and lost 3 and 2.
The opposition were just too good on the day, and now all but through to the finals day. We now need to regroup and fight on again after Xmas.
