The Originals began their Inter-Swindle Ryder Cup campaign with a convincing 11-5 victory over the Early Birds.
In the first doubles match, Barry and Martin were rocked back by Zack and Andy Gorman who flew out of the blocks, and despite putting up some solid resistance had to admit defeat at the 15th.
Then John and I played Chris Fendt and Joe Krarup, and early signs were ominous with Chris finding an early birdie and striking the ball sweetly. But we held our ground, managed to turn 2 up, and with JC maintaining his excellent form of late, held off a resurgent Joe (King of the lipouts) to win 3 and 2, just in time to get to the bar ahead of the rain.
We were shortly joined by Paul Daly who destroyed Grant 4 and 3 with some fantastic golf in the first of the singles.
In the third doubles Jezza and Rob were involved in a birdyfest with Hayden and Gavin Nebbeling, and ran in 2 and 1 winners – golf of the highest order.
Bob and Colin had a tense wellfought battle with Ray and Graham, and coming down the eighteenth one down, Bob chipped close to win the hole and grab a vital point in front of the gallery.
In the singles Graham A suffered with a cold putter and succumbed to Richard on the 16th.
So with the news that Graham L was 3 down to Ian Gutteridge on the 14th and Bryan involved in a nailbiter with Sunil in the final singles, we waited nervously for the conclusion.
Graham was coming down the last fairway and the match seemed live. Ian found the water and Graham ever the showman, stuck the ball close to the pin, so we thought we’d nicked a point , only to discover that it was actually for a win – fantastic performance from our man of the match.
So we’d won and all we needed now to put the icing on the cake was Bryan to hold off Sunil, which he did in style, winning the eighteenth for 2 up after an epic battle.
Great golf everybody, and thanks to the Early Birds for all the games being played in excellent spirit.
