Surrey National manage a close away win 3-2
The weather was relatively kind to us. The Add was cold but playable with only a few bits of a lying snow around the greens. Greens themselves were very firm, frozen for the front nine before the temperature eased slightly and softened them for the back nine.
The team of myself, Scottie Yule, Tom Austin, Al Gollop and Nick Brown were up against it from the start. On full handicap difference in matchplay pairs, the teams were given out and it didnt look good. I was giving 3 shots, Tom and Scottie both had to give 11 away (eleven!!!), Al got one given and Nick gave two. Apparently they had picked “a team to win”, all solid mid-handicappers and very sound putters.
Our team happened to have very limited experience round the Add as well. I think I’ve played it only 5 times, Tom played it six years ago (and came with his notes from back then), Scottie, Al and Nick have been there only once or twice each at best. Plus with no courtesy shots given to the away team it was game on.
With some very very ropey golf on the front nine, I was one down at the turn but steadied somewhat against some very solid putting from the Addington’s Steve. In the final stretch I managed to win the 16th and 17th to pull one ahead and was given the last putt on the 18th to take the hole and the match. One up.
Behind me, Tom was up and down against a 16handicapper who was very steady and despite driving very well, was pipped 3&2. All square.
Scottie was also giving 11shots away but the usual Macum steady play resulted in a win against their club Vice Captain Ravi. One up.
Al ‘Radar’ Gollop didnt have the best of days but remained in good spirits after going down 5&4. All square.
It came down to Nick. With some heroics noted below, Nick walked up the 18th to announce that he’d already won… so Surrey national came out on top 3-2. I don’t think they were too happy, but with some gritty team play we managed the win.
…go to Tom and Scottie giving away a massive 11 shots each in their matches. However, performance of the day has to go to Nick. In the clubhouse it turns out Nick had holed out on the 6th with his second from down beside the Wodehouse bunker. He also eagled the temporary green par5 12th. Awesome play.
Well done to the team, lets see who we play in the next round.
