Match report from Lee after the match in the Caterham Cup (Men’s Pairs)….
Posted on behalf of Mr Lee Feasey
Well where do I start, after not playing for 3 weeks and hearing how well Dean was playing, myself and Gollampost went into the match with very low expectations of winning – giving Dean and Sean 8 shots each and Allan only receiving 3, it was going to be a tough match.
Starting down the first Allan holed a 15-20 foot birdie putt and we were 1 up. Dean made a good 5 foot par putt on the second for the half. The third was interesting, Allan hit one to 25 foot back right I also hit one to 15 foot back right, Dean had put his in the drink and with all the pressure on his shoulders Sean nailed one to 7 foot, but the hole was halved with 3’s Sean’s putt needing another half a roll to go in.
Now knowing we were giving 3 shots on the spin, it was going to be tough. They won the 4th and the 5th, so we were one down. The 6th was halved in 5’s and coming to the 7th, Sean was in close for 2 and had the closest par putt. Allan had 20 foot and he holed it and Sean missed his, all square.
The 8th was won with a par from myself having to play my second shot sideways back to the green. We headed to the 9th one up and everyone receiving a shot.
As he had been doing all of the front 9, Dean bombed a drive down the left hand side and we were all right by, or past, the bunkers. Everyone hit the green. Dean and Sean both made 5 nett 4’s and I had 5 foot for the birdie and the win, and it dropped, 2 up at the turn.
The 10th was halved in pars, Dean won the 11th with a great par. Gollop holed a 15 footer on 12 for a birdie and the win to go back to 2 up. 13th was halved in pars.
14th was very interesting Allan was having fun topping his 3 wood so was out of the hole, I was up by the 12th tee box for 2 Dean and Sean were both short for 3, so level as we lie. Dean and Sean put theirs to 20+ foot, and I put mine to 10 feet, they both made 6’s and I had a putt for the win but left it an inch short. Sean won the 15th with a great up and down par.
So we were now only 1 up. Dean stuck the pressure on by nailing a drive up the centre of the fairway with a slight draw, and then hit the green and put it within 15 foot for 2. I was at the back of the green for 2, Allan made a 5 and from nowhere Dean 3 putted to half the hole, the 17th was halved with pars.
So 1 up with one to play but giving Dean and Sean a shot. Dean was up and nailed a drive down the middle a tad short as it was into wind, and Sean did the same. Allan eased my conscience by smacking one down the middle and with the ease lifted I nailed one down the left hand side watching it drift back to the centre. It was Sean to go first, 3 wood in hand and hit his natural fade up the right hand side short of the water, Dean then followed hitting a 3 wood, he had 240 to centre, he nailed it and was just off the front of the green, pressure back on.
Allan tw8tted his up the right half way down the slope by the green, I measured up the distance 149 yards, picked up my 9 iron (feeling the most nervous I have ever felt in a match) but I hit the shot of the day to about 6 feet. Sean chipped to about 8 foot, then Dean nailed it to about 4 foot. Allan then proceeded to hit it across the green nearly into the bunker. Sean made a 5 nett 4, I had the birdie putt for the win, and it drift just passed, another 4. Dean had a 4 foot putt to keep the game alive, and under all the pressure nailed it!!! Back up the first we go.
Dean, Sean and Allan got good drives away, I fatted an iron up the middle. It was me to go first advised by Allan to hit and 8 iron I hit it to 7 feet. Allan hit the green and Sean and Dean missed. I thought that was that. I made an easy par, Dean had chipped up to 8 foot and had to hole this put to carry on, and he did!!!!
Then up the second all hit good drives but Sean was in the bunker and ended up making a 5. Allan was just off the side of the green in 2, Dean had hit up the top right of the green and I was 6 foot away for 2, Dean chipped down and missed his par putt so I had 2 for it but only needed 1 as I made the birdie.
A very tough and good game.
