New for 2017 the Iron Man challenge. The idea is to test our skills against one another using only your irons. The clue is in the name and I should have charged a pound for charity to everyone who asked if they could use their Hybrid clubs!
Deliberately scheduled for June, when I hoped the sun would be shining and the fairways firm which would no doubt help the ball travel further☺.
However I had forgot to tell the big man upstairs to switch the hair dryer off, so we had gusty 25mph winds which of course made it very challenging. I believe Scotty described the conditions as “Brutal, man”.
Still we had around 50 players, mostly from the swashbucklers and Pistol Knights – who embraced the idea of playing something different and went out there to compete.
What they were treated with was a course in great condition, excellent greens (all be it with some treacherous pin positions that resulted in a number of people de-greening their putts (especially on 8, Sean ☺) and high winds to spice it all up.
And the scores seemed to reflect that. From the 50ish playing only around 30 put their cards into master scorecard, some clearly not wanting to share their woes with everyone else ☺. The scores recorded varied from 23 to 35 points, with the standard scratch around 30.
Swashbucklers clean up
So in third place our very own Hulk Man Alan Savill with a respectable 33 points. Second place with 35 points (but losing on count back) Dan El Mason and winning also with 35 point (20 on the back) is yours truly. The Club Captain himself ☺ and Swashbucklers taking all the top slots.
Of course this led to a rumbling chorus of “You can’t win your own competition, can you!!!”. Well I’d liked to think of it as not winning my own competition, as setting an example and leading from the front… ☺
And the mob was soon quieted after drinks were brought for all those still remaining….
In all everyone to enjoy the day, which is the important part. So a big thanks to those who took part and a Special thanks for Phil for the excellent posters.
Hopefully next year more will participant from around the club, as you don’t need to hit your irons a country mile to win ☺
Many thanks
Mark
