Four of us trucked off last week to Lisbon for a long weekend Mini Tour.
Sean had been before and made the arrangements, with myself, Sid and Johnny making up the four. An hours drive from Lisbon airport we stayed at Praia D’el Ray. Nice apartment with superb views and three courses to play.
First up (only opened in 2017), West Cliffs, a world class Cynthia Dye gem. I was massively impressed with this course, 18 signature holes, you couldn’t pick a favourite or a worse, stunning views, magnificent design, 5 sets of tees and we played it fairly short, on the advice of the starter, he was right as we realised when added up our points. This was a better ball weekend though, so it didn’t matter, did it Johnny?
Sean and me getting bashed up by Sid and himself. This is the best course in Portugal in my book and its knocking on my number 3 door at the moment, have to play it again I suppose, just to be sure.
The usual too many first day sherbets and a few port heads in the morning as we make our way to Seve’s Royal Obidos, just up the road. 6 3s, 6 4s and 6 5s as is his style and a lovely course, lots of water, shaped fairways and target golf, very different to the first day but a vey good course, myself and Sid did the bashing here, 6 and 5 I believe chaps, we lost count!
A great fish supper at the local beach restaurant and an earlier night for all.
Last course was Praia D’el Ray which Sean has played many times before but a first for the rest of us. Sid and Sean decided to go for the boards as their mode of transport, Johnny and myself sticking with trolleys. We watched as they sheepishly practised around the caddy masters hut and then off to the practise ground where they promptly got told off for going out of bounds.
Off we went and it didn’t take them long to get the hang of it. Another great course with a great mixture of sea links, parkland, target, bit of everything, Johnny and myself had a four up lead at one point but it was whittled down to one by the 18th tee, however, we held our nerve and nicked the win, the B team getting their kicks out of the snow boards and well done to them both, no crashes.
A fantastic weekend, great weather, food, company, apartment, two very good courses and one outstanding course, well done Sean and well done Sid for driving. I highly recommend West Cliffs, I could do a tour there and play it every day, its a worldy.
