A Swashbuckler semi-final was lined up with Phil and myself taking on the might of Mr Nowak and Mr Hope today. Delayed a smidge due to diaries and club matches/comps, we settled on Bank Holiday Monday and battle lines were drawn at 8am sharp.
Wayne and Denz started well, going two up after three as we all got going. The 3rd was gift-wrapped after Phil and I both found water. This despite taking one from the team and getting soaked playing Phil’s ball from 6″ water. Worth a go… possibly. Soon dried out as the sun came out and after a steady 4th and 5th from us we were all square.
Was never more than two holes in it. First they went ahead by two, then back to level, then we went ahead, then level again. Wayne was hitting the ball a mile as usual and Denzil was coming in with some scorching drives despite a sore knee.
Denzil found the bottom groove of a 7iron chip *cough* thin *cough* to roll it stiff down the whole length of the 8th green for a half. Then I popped up from the depths of the 9th greenside bunker to hit the pin for a gimmie with Wayne having put his approach to only 6feet. A near thing but yet another half.
So all square at the turn and we shared some good (and some ‘indifferent’ shots) round the next few holes to reach the par5 14th with scores even. It was then Phil’s turn to find the lower two grooves of a wedge and roll it into a couple of feet and the birdie meant we went one up. Phil and I both found the fairway on the 15th with the boys just above the right bunker. After putting my approach just off the green to the left, Phil nudged it nicely down and we picked up another.
2up playing the 16th. Denzil and I found the fairway with decent tee shots but both approaches then found either greenside rough or bunker and we halved for fives and onto the 17th dormie.
Three drives went left, one right. Wayne came in from the right pulling his approach a wee bit into the rough, Phil played off a tricky raised lie but found the green with a nifty bounce or two and soon after it was hand shaking time.
Great game, close all the way and played in good spirit. Thanks to Denz and Wayne for the game. The final is at some point after the Jacksons play (a hopefully recovering) Neil Lawerence and partner in the other semi.
