Probably my top UK course and we were lucky enough to play the primary nine’s of red and blue. Only thing we were up against were the greens which this week had been tined and very heavily sanded. Just that time of year really, and we’ve had similar conditions before – it made things a bit tricky seeing balls skid on landing on the green and putts thrown about by the sand. Still, a fantastic track and the weather was superb.
6 Surrey National out today. Grant and I were playing with Society members Steve and Bruce, whilst Society regulars Jim, Phil, Sid Bailey and Backdoor Johnny were in the 4ball ahead of us. WingCommander Adams and Mr Chamberlain off on their travels (see below).
Our fourball enjoyed our match. Some comedy putting from us all due to the sanded greens and a few wayward shots spread around. It wasn’t Steve’s day, not having a chance to play much recently and Bruce had a few ropey shots mid round. I was fairly steady but couldn’t putts to drop – 35pts not bad but didn’t come close in the final shake up.
As a team we entertained the thought of having a sniff at the team prize with 86 points (best two scores per hole), but again we weren’t close.
Has to be said that most of this score was due to our clear winner on the day, our playing partner – a certain Mr Grant Wallis – who absolutely walked the guests prize with a stunning 44pts. All very steady as you’d expect, and, only playing off his club handicap, Grant scored 2 four pointers in the round, a heap of 3pts and yes, that 44 included 1 blob!
Top golf mate, well done and glad you enjoyed the day.
With Grant taking the bubbly and Pro V1s for the guest prize, we weren’t close at the team prize …the winning score there I think was won with 91 (ouch!). Good golf won the members prizes, 41pt came first, 39 second… both from 9 handicappers. Very good golf with the heavily sanded greens.
A seriously great course, looking forward to next year although I do hope we can manage a date around the tining.
Kiwi Golf Adventures
Not to be out done with some top golf, WingCommander Graham (Adams) has sent the following picture taken mid round as he and Brian have been battling the rough this week in New Zealand.
That’s not a bad backdrop I suppose! Brian looks shattered after a few holes with Graham, clearly needs the support of the buggy before another Adams joke is unleashed, or he’s sent off towards the rough to look for another Mr Adams ‘oh-that-was-unlucky’ tee shot.
