Some heroics both at Augusta and Surrey National over the weekend.
Saturday saw teamSweetman (Mick and Barry) take top two spots with Steady Bob Betts coming in 3rd. Tricky conditions on Saturday, rain was pretty heavy first thing and though it abated by about half 9 that is some great scoring in some shoddy conditions. Strong breeze was there for most of us during the day.
Only 7 in the Swindle with lots in Saturday’s comp, still away at Stevie’s wedding, or put off by the early rain.
Sunday had better weather but it was chilly with a strong wind. Green’s were soggy from overnight rain and bobbly. Despite that, Tom ‘the Mascot’ Austin was in top form shooting a gross 1under 71 and taking the comp with 42 points. Fantastic scoring. In the same 3ball, Stu recorded a very solid 38points for 2nd place.
After the comp, Surrey National played in the Surrey Fives against Banstead. I think Bob is team captain, not sure if a match report will be sent over, but I heard from a certain Mr Jaggs that the team won 4-1 and go through to the next round and that he nobbled the big hitter in his match 3&2. Well done to the team, hope they get a nice draw in next round.
Danny Willett wins Masters
No doubt most of us were glued to the tv (or rather, those of us that didn’t nod off before the end), but Danny Willett put in a spectacular display to take the green jacket (BBC website report). Yes Mr Speith had a big ‘moment’ on the 12th (twice), but a lot of the coverage isn’t paying due note to Lee Westwood who tried his hardest yet again and took 2nd place by himself. Another great result – I’d certainly like him to get a major soon.
A Brit winning was a great thing but to see the day play out with leaderboard stacked with Willett, Westwood, Casey, Fitzpatrick, Kjeldsen, Justin Rose and Rory…. yes its still v early in the year but bodes well for Hazeltine in September! Players Champ soon, then the US Open… clean Euro majors sweep please.
