Day 1 Saturday
Course in fair nick after all the recent rain and the downpour the night before. Green keepers had clearly worked their socks off so a big thank you to them all. So Champs Day came around again, we’re off the blues (starting on the 1st which was a bit of a surprsie), and with a nice soft course, it was playing quite long.
My 3ball of Jay and young Haydn all made it through and I found myself usually about 30 yards behind the two of them as they punished the ball off every tee. None of us had any real putts drop, couldnt really get going but steady golf all round. Hadyn’s thinned greenside bunker shot was of note – knifed out at head height at 100mph, it was surely heading far into the cabbage till it hit the pin, got caught up in the flag and dropped to about 4feet beside the hole. Bit slow at places especially towards the end of the front 9 but we all got round ok.
Swindlers Stevie, Tony, Bryan H, Jez P, Graham A, Danny, Lee F, Al Savs, Scottie and myself all made Day2 the cut being 87 gross.
As usual, clubhouse after was full of couldve’s, wouldve’s and shouldve’s, along with sad tales of the odd sh*tter (a “lovely” but appropriate term!) that carved up several hopes and expectations. The scores were all updated and Matt sorted out qualifiers and the non quallies off the 10th next day in the morning.
Day 2 Sunday
Bright sunshine, slight breeze and a warm sticky day. Opinions split over which day was ‘easier’ – given the amount of rain we had I guess we just needed to be happy we had a course that was playable and in good nick. Saturday’s odd bunker-lakes had drained and with the odd one being GUR (for obvious reasons), they were all in play and half decent given the green keeper’s hard work.
Qualifiers started out at 8am, as did the non-quallies off the 10th.
My 3 ball of Stu Mass, Jack and myself were out last, and we all put some very steady golf on the front 9 – I was one over, Stu 2 and Jack 5. I couldn’t buy a birdie all weekend but played quite steadily, one over to the 13th until a chip went short, the chip and run ran on a bit and I had to take a 5. Then missing a 4foot birdie on the 14th was especially frustrating after that double and it saw Stu ease ahead.
Good pars on 16th and 17th, saw me get back close to Stu but my drive clipped the tree off the 18th after a heely cut effort (swinging a bit too fast), forcing a lay up and in front of clubhouse could only find the bunker with a wedge and after a putt slipped close I had to take a 6. Stu laid up after a slightly pulled drive, hit a great approach to 5feet, but didnt need it in the end and took the Club Champ 2016 title by two shots. I came in 2nd, Thomas ‘Gorilla’ Austin third.
Well done Stu (and caddy Keith) on the long overdue win. And thanks to Jack for making it a great, enjoyable 3ball.
Caroline took the ladies Club Champs title, very well done! Janine (with the mysterious energy drink) taking runners up spot.
On a personal note, thank you for all the messages of support from yesterday and today – much appreciated.
Apologies for any confusion about tee times yesterday – I’d only spoken to the assistant pro to have something booked, till Matt cleared everything up with the non-quallies off the 10th at 8am.
Well done to Al Gollop – nothing official I’m afraid, but checking on Masterscoreboard, Al took the nett scores win from the weekend on countback from young dangerous Luke Carter 2nd and myself 3rd. Well done mate!
And RitchieBandit cleaned up the fivers on Saturday (gasp shock horror), with a very nice nett 68. Nice… but only cut to 18.6 Ritchie! Well all need to have a word!
