A cracking day for golf. The start of the ‘golfing year’ got underway with the Captain’s Drive-In on Saturday 3rd May.
With the sun burning off the early morning dew over the 18th, the day started at 8 with teams heading out for a shotgun start for the texas scramble. Usual mix of poor, average, outstanding golf by the teams. Stu Simmonds, Gav Nebbeling, Andy G and Keith took the overall win with a very impressive 58.5. Sunil’s team came second with the Swashbuckler team of Bryan Hogben, Scottie, Jez and Wayne a very respectable 3rd.
Our own Dave Shirley missed a hole in one by inches on the 7th (would have been a very expensive day for Dave else), with myself and Stu Massey taking the other nearest the pins.
After a curry, the club all watched Graham and Bronwen “putt out” to formally end their year as captains. Mr Loveless helped me make a 50p bet by 3 putting, there was a a great deal more on a 4 putt. The incoming captains then drove off the 1st. Sean drove a mighty 152 yards *cough* 30 yards right, and the distance guessed correctly by our own Jez Parfitt. Liz whacked her’s 102 yards, won dubiously by our outgoing captain Mr “CC” Loveless.

Graham, Liz, Sean and Bronwen
I didnt make the evening but very entertaining it was by all accounts… judging by the state of some of the Swindle the next morning. Sean provided an outfit for Graham, as shown below… before entertaining everyone with a graphic account of how Graham “CC” got his name.
Here’s hoping Sean and Liz both have great years as Captains of Surrey National.
