Lee (Feez) and myself headed out to Dorking yesterday to play at Betchworth Park. Daisy was in the ProAm there and in the absence of Phil due to a bad back for some reason (*cough* 32 consecutive golf days *cough*), we played with Oscar also from Royal Mid-Surrey who plays off a fantastic plus3.
Driving there, we had more torrential rain and were waiting for a call to confirm it was off. By the time we arrived it had lessened and we had a window without rain till about 3pm… so game on. Course was obviously very wet but held up pretty well. Greens quite sodden across the day but in great nick and still ran very well. Some drizzle later on but all in all we got very lucky given forecast.
We started on the 7th in a shotgun start, and all started with some steady play. Pro’s played their own medal game, teams played best-two nett medal scores against handicap. We all went round just over our respective handicaps, decent if not spectacular play. Not enough for any honours but enough to all enjoy the day… and its worth noting that the handicap duffers of Lee and myself took down the sparkling pro’s in our pairs match by 1 hole on our last hole (we had a shot but the 6th really doesn’t merit Stroke Index 3… but a win’s a win). Worth noting the very nice buffet lunch too.
If anyone plays in a match or comp away from Surrey National, just send me an email about the day (good or bad play!), maybe with a photo and I’ll post it here.
