Assif marches on & Phil and I lose in Greensomes

31 January, 2016 by Hew Leave a Comment

First off, Happy Birthday Yeti

bc1Brian had his birthday on Sunday – my present was to taxi Stevie about instead of Brian and Mushi led a rousing solo performance of Happy Birthday in the clubhouse.

Unsurprisingly soggy underfoot over the weekend – trolley ban remaining in place (as is clearly needed) – but 3/4 playable.  Saturday chilly windy damp, Sunday rain/drizzle to start turning just grey and damp.

Assif overcame mighty Backdoor Johnny on Saturday by only a hole or two in the Swindle Knockout.  John was still scratching his head about the game.  He was last seen mumbling about being on the 11th for 3, his opponent in trouble on for 6…. and after Backdoor 4-putting to only half the hole.

Missed opportunities stretched into mine and Phil’s game against canny Peter Wheeler and the wily campaigner Bob English.  First 4 or 5 holes when to par, but after we gifted each other halves on 7th and 8th holes, and I think we hit the turn 1up.  Losing the 10th it was steady to the 12th where they went birdie par and opened up some daylight between us.  We couldnt add much pressure and lost the 15th to a 4 foot putt and went dormie3…  and not doing better than halving the 16th it was curtains.  Sean warned us to watch for Peter’s driving and Bob’s putting… and so it proved.  Bob is  devil with a 7 or 8iron from the fringe… he knocked it stiff at least 5 or 6 times… Peter barely had to putt.

Cracking round, thoroughly enjoyable match and good luck to them both in next round.

Stevie tucked away a win in Saturday’s Swindle… well done… but wandering back home at 7.30am Sunday morning after no sleep meant Sunday’s performance from our StevieBoy was somewhat lacking.  “I couldnt see on the front nine mate” was an amusing quote.

After our loss on Saturday, Phil and I sneaked a halved win on Sunday’s Swindle whilst the Originals took a Ryder Cup win (match report from Mr Adams to follow I hope).  Only 7 of us out so it wasn’t official. Phew!  Rain and drizzle had to be battled through on the front nine but we finished on a mild damp winter afternoon only slightly soggy.

Comp next weekend – check sign up board if you havent already.
