Surrey National win 3.5 vs. 1.5 in Round3 of the Mail on Sunday Classic
Myself, Scottie Yule, John Vicars, Nick Brown and Al Gollampost faced a Bletchingley Golf Club who came fresh from a 5-0 win over Lingfield in the previous round. This was Round3, and after an away win over The Add in round 1 followed by Westerham, this was our second home game and Bletchingly’s first away.
In singles match play, we followed the stableford comp however the day really wasn’t as slow as first feared.
I was lucky to start well with two birdies in first 3 holes and didnt look back. Managed a win on 15th by 4&3. After myself and their Captain Tom played out the last holes, Al Gollop was already in with another win. So that was two up and we were nearly there.
Scottie came in mumbling about the greens and unfortunately was pipped by one. This was not a happy Maccam. Tee to green was fine for our fresh Order of Merit winner, but he had no luck on the greens. Apparently his opponent had all the bounces and luck on the day and even questioned himself as to whether he was a member… such was his luck.
Nick came in next with a hard fought half – he was quick to say that this was a very fair result given the indifferent standard of golf him and his opponent showed.
Fresh from Mexico with vim, vigor and jetlag, Mr Vicars then sealed the victory confirming his win on the 18th. His opponent could do at best a half, which wouldn’t have been enough and the team victory was confirmed. Al Gol and his opponent could then finish their beers as the threat of going up the 19th to decide it was not greeted with much enthusiasm.
A challenging day on bouncy, sandy greens (don’t ask Scottie) but a fantastic team effort again to see us through to the next round. Once again, every game played in a great atmosphere – they were a gracious and good bunch of lads from Bletchingly.
Surrey Fives take a close home win team over Kingswood at home
Playing behind us the Surrey Fives team were up. Barry’s Ashlin and Bone, Wayne, Jim and Brian Yeti Chamberlain took on Kingswood in the next round of the Surrey Fives. Mr Bone and the Yeti won, Mr Ashlin a narrow loss and Jim missed out against despite playing very well.
Thus Wayne’s match was the decider after halving, and they had to head up the 19th…. and then 20th. From the seating area, we saw his opponent having to run back to the 2nd and take another tee shot, I think the writing was on the wall and Wayne bought in the win…. eventually. Apparently, Jim reported that in Wayne’s match holes were halved with provisionals… twice… so the golf was hardly sparkling but a win’s a win… well done Surrey Fives team.
Oh and Denzil’s back, you may have heard him even if you weren’t at the club. Welcome back Denz!
Mr Vicars returns from Mexico
Still on Mexico time (apparently to him it was about 3am when he tee’d off), John won on Sunday. He shared a picture of the local wildlife he saw whilst playing golf out there.
If it was a shark it would’ve been Wayne, as it is I think there is a bit of Gordon Thompson about it… a bit green about the gills following the Early Birds missing out on the Ryder Cup Day.
