Off we all trucked for a cheeky Autumn mini tour, straight from work Wednesday evening for five rounds in the Costa Del Sol.
First up for the chaps, Graham, Sean, Bob and myself was La Cala, a mountain course which some of you guys have played. I played it over 20 years ago so didn’t remember much. Nice course and nice weather so nothing to grumble about other than having keeping to the paths in our buggies. I can only remember my score, 39 points, Sean and myself had been behind Graham and Bob the whole round but I had a 30ft chip on the last to win the match, I stuck it to about 6 inches then tapped in for a par, Graham made par too though so the match was halved, a good come back though.
Next up on Friday was Torrequebrada with the ladies, they played together and went out first, Sean and myself took on Graham and Bob again. A fantastic course, not a boring hole there. Once again, I can only remember my score 33, (perhaps the rest of you can post yours to the site), but this time Sean and myself beat the B team of Graham and Bob. We also had a blind bar matchplay against the ladies afterwards but they weren’t over interested, in fact two of their team walked off half way through!! anyway, suffice to say we beat them.
Day 3 was Mijas, again a course which a load of you have played, great condition but a little flat, no ladies today so back to the A team vs the B team, I happened to be on the A team again! and had 33 points again, we bashed the B boys to make it 2-1.
Day 4 and all eight of us headed up the mountain to Alhaurin, a first for me, the only course I hadn’t played before, a Seve designed course so I was really keen to see what it was like. It is way up in the mountains so as with all mountain courses, any shots off line and you end up in all sorts. A very interesting track but very tricky and not in the best condition. We swapped teams with Bob and myself making up the A team…strangely enough. We took on Sean and Graham, and kept them at bay for quite a while, one up after 10 but they ended up with a comfortable win, think I had 30 points. Fantastic lunch in the clubhouse as it was at all the courses we went too, really impressive.
Last day and it had been raining heavily all night so golf was looking very doubtful, but never to be beaten, Graham, Sean and myself trucked out to The Santana golf course with our fingers crossed and positive vibe heads on. It was raining heavily all the way to the course and was looking very grim, when we arrived the course was closed and we were told with more rain to come it would not re open. So we ordered a coffee, got the weather maps and course guides out and started planning our contingency. I text Denzil to see what courses he reckoned drained well and eventually we headed up the coast to Marbella GC, knowing that if that was closed too, we could truck on to Rio Reale, both courses I had played before but a long time ago.
They were very friendly at Marbella and eventually we got out at 10.30 by which time the sun was shining and in fact it was very hot, the sun shone for the whole round, perfect weather, unbelievable really after what we had been through. This was by far my favourite track, a great golf course in good condition, particularly considering the weather. Sean and myself played a better ball against Graham with a ghost pro, so he had a given two points every hole, he absolutely bashed us, not sure the format was correct! but well done Graham and a great round of golf in fantastic weather. Very much a game of two halves for me, 10 points front 9 with 5 blobs!! and 20 back, I know Sean had 33 here so well done to him, once again a superb lunch and then back home to pack up for the airport, all gone too quickly as these things always do.
Thanks to Sean and Tracy for their hospitality and to Sean and Jane for doing all the driving. I bet you’re glad to be back in your little black money box aren’t you Bob?
